Party on a Tuesday

Opening

Have you ever been in awe of someone who seems to be able to conquer every challenge and succeed despite all the odds? It’s possible that you’ve questioned what makes these people different from others who appear to quit at the first indication of trouble. According to current study, the concept of grit holds the key to the solution.

Grit is a character quality that entails desire and tenacity towards long-term objectives. It is the capacity to work consistently over time and persevere in the face of difficulty. Even in the face of obstacles or failures, people can achieve their goals with a combination of perseverance, tenacity, and self-control.

But why should you give grit any thought? After all, isn’t being intelligent or skilled all it takes to succeed? While talent and intelligence are unquestionably important for success, they are not the only ones. According to research, tenacity predicts achievement more accurately than IQ or talent alone. In fact, those with high levels of grit are more likely to succeed in their endeavors, perform better in their careers, and feel happier and more content.

So how can you employ grit to succeed at work? Whether you are a student, professional, or business owner, having grit will enable you to push past obstacles, recover from failures, and finally realize your full potential. In this post, we’ll examine what grit is, why it’s significant, and how to cultivate and apply it at work so that you may succeed. So let’s get started and learn what grit is all about.

What is Grit?

Origin

From the early ages, the word grit had a meaning of dust, earth, or gravel. Over time the word grit evolved into the meaning of courage and resolve strength of character. If someone has grit, they have the determination and courage to continue to accomplish a task or goal even if it is found to be difficult. It has been studied that grit portrays perseverance and passion for long-term goals. As the generation has changed and many viewpoints, grit has become a term used to refer to one’s hardship of work ethic, and effective grit can be to daily task performance as well as accomplishing one’s goal.

Grit in the Business World

Grit is passion and perseverance for long-term and meaningful goals. It is the ability to persist in something you feel passionate about and persevere when you face obstacles. Over time the definition of grit has evolved into the business aspect that makes a person determined to bounce back from failures and setbacks. Grit has helped change the way many people view the ethics of what working is within an individual as well as working with other people. True grit can only be developed through practice, experience, and failure.

Angela Duckworth is a business coach whose main priority is to help people succeed and accomplish their goals, while also feeling self-accomplishment by fulfilling their missions. Duckworth strongly believes in and practices the use of grit to help people reach those goals and has been seen to be very efficient in not wanting to give up, and rather seeing those failed moments as lessons learned. Duckworth’s research shows that even though intelligence and talent are unarguably favorable assets, grit is the ultimate predictor of success. As a woman in the business world, she shares great accomplishments and goals meet without the strategic use of grit, and why she believes that grit can grow significantly more when people take the time to understand what grit is and how it is used.

Grit in Cultures

Grit in different cultures depends on the people you surrounded yourself with or put yourself in. Grit is defined as a certain characteristic one has commitment and passion within their own goals they have set for themselves. Culture Grit is depending on seeing how a person’s up bring is in the world either could be how they were raised or the job’s motto. A person’s grit in life may be different from someone who was raised in a city like the streets of New York City to someone who grew up on a farm in a rural area. Both of these individuals experience life in different ways but could be surrounded by people who had a gritty mindset that could have been a mentor or a partner that help them embody the same mindset for life. Cultural Grit in a company can shape the way you think and work. Costco and Chick-fil-A are good examples of this gritting company agenda that help create this mindset for their employees who do not have this mentality yet. These companies show passion for what they are doing in the world and will express that to you and for yourself to express to the customers or their peers. Angela Duckworth said it herself “To be grittier, find a gritty culture and join it” and to make people gritter, make the group culture grittier.” That this gritty culture can be used to express your own goals and progress the company’s goals to further success.

Why should I care

Intro

This article will discuss the idea of grit, which is the determination and enthusiasm of a person to accomplish long-term goals. We will study individuals that exhibit this quality in both historical and contemporary contexts, highlighting the importance of grit, perseverance, and hard work in achieving success.

Numerous historical personalities have earned notoriety for their tenacity and perseverance in the face of difficulty. We’ll look at the lives of two such people, Joan of Arc and Harriet Tubman, and consider how their steadfast dedication to their objectives enabled them to overcome insurmountable challenges. In addition, we will look at contemporary grit, showcasing those who are presently pursuing their objectives with zeal, tenacity, and endurance. We want to provide a thorough knowledge of what it means to embody grit and its impact on achievement by looking at historical and contemporary examples.

Old-school examples of grit

The Maid of Orleans, often known as Joan of Arc, is the ideal illustration of a historical figure who showed extraordinary grit. Joan was told by divine voices to lead the French army to victory over the English during the Hundred Years War after being born in a time of political unrest in France. Joan persisted in her objective despite facing fierce opposition from the male-dominated military and religious authorities, eventually leading her army to victory at the Battle of Orleans.

The result of Joan’s unwavering resolve and bravery in the face of difficulty was her capture, heresy trial, conviction, and execution at the stake. She was later declared a saint, but her legacy endured. The narrative of Joan of Arc is a potent illustration of the great fortitude and tenacity that may be displayed in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges.

The African American abolitionist and political activist Harriet Tubman is another historical figure renowned for her tenacity. Tubman was born into slavery and overcame several obstacles throughout her life, including being seriously hurt while attempting to flee. Despite these challenges, Tubman persisted and eventually rose to prominence as one of the Underground Railroad’s most illustrious guides, helping hundreds of slaves escape to freedom. She is a true example of grit because of her perseverance and bravery in the face of peril and misfortune.

Harriet’s tenacity extended beyond her involvement in the Underground Railroad. She risked her life to obtain information and support the war cause while working as a nurse, cook, and spy for the Union Army during the Civil War. She persisted in the face of criticism and hardship after the war to continue advocating for women’s and civic rights.

It’s important to remember that grit is a quality that is not exclusive to well-known historical personalities. Many regular folks show incredible grit in their daily lives. Living instances of grit are those who overcome severe obstacles, such as disease, poverty, or discrimination, yet nevertheless manage to pursue their desires and reach their objectives.

Grit is a quality that takes work to develop, but may be developed over time and strengthened. It demands tenacity, enthusiasm, and the readiness to accept failure as an essential step on the path to success. Historical individuals like Joan of Arc and Harriet Tubman serve as role models for us all, showing us that we can achieve our goals and overcome any obstacle with perseverance, hard effort, and drive.

Modern Day

Grit is a trait that is frequently linked to success and accomplishment. It speaks to the capacity to continue in the face of difficulties, stay focused and work hard over time, and recover from failures. Anyone who wishes to accomplish their objectives and realize their full potential must possess grit. Passion is one of the essential elements of grit. People with grit are frequently intensely dedicated to their objectives and work, and they get meaning and purpose from what they accomplish. Their passion serves as a source of inspiration and encouragement, as well as support during trying moments. Perseverance is a crucial aspect of grit. People that have grit are willing to put in a lot of effort, persevere through challenges, and never give up. They are willing to put in the effort necessary to achieve their objectives because they are aware that success frequently necessitates consistent effort over time. Grit includes resilience as well. Grit allows a person to overcome obstacles and learn from their mistakes. They can maintain their long-term goals even when things don’t go as planned because they see obstacles and disappointments as opportunities for growth and learning. Grit also requires having a developing attitude. People with grit think they can improve their talents and abilities by working hard and practicing. and they are not discouraged by failures or setbacks. They always strive to learn new things and better themselves, and they regard obstacles as chances to put their skills to the test. In general, grit is a strong attribute that can support people in achieving their objectives and overcoming obstacles. Anyone can acquire grit and accomplish great things in their personal and professional lives by creating passion, tenacity, resilience, and a growth mentality.

Exemplary Men

Two examples in today’s world of formidable individuals who have demonstrated grit to its highest pedigree are one world-class athlete, Lebron James, and the other, the well-known MC Shawn Carter, better known as Jayz. Both have overcome a lot in their lives to get to the point where they are in life currently. Lebron James, who did not have a father figure present in his adolescence and was raised by Gloria James in the poverty-stricken, crime-infested neighborhoods of northern Ohio in a small town called Akron, For James, his journey, began there but is far from where it is right now, and it all started with a ball and a dream, followed by grit and determination to become the best basketball player to ever dribble a ball. He did it while enduring the hate, criticism, and uphill battle that comes with attempting to play in the most competitive basketball league in the world. At a young age, he understood what it was going to take and how much farther he had to go past expectations to solidify himself in a realm of almost supernatural basketball talent that was ahead of him. While, on the journey, he attained an impeccable focus and developed a love for the grind and hardship it takes to get to the top of Mount Everest. This relentless ability to pursue what most would deem the “impossible” allowed him to not only smash unthinkable records, but also win multiple MVPs, NBA Finals, All-Star, and All-NBA Nods, and so much more, just because he did not allow his surroundings to choose his destination.

Now, Shawn Carter, aka Jay-Z, has a similar story, but he chose a different route. Gloria Carter gave birth to Jay-Z on December 4, 1969, and he would grow and be raised in the treacherous environment of the Macy Houses inside Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant projects. along with his three older siblings. He found his way through music at a young age and realized he had a unique talent for rapping, but he did not have enough money to take himself to the next level, so he fiddled around with street life until he had enough money to record his music properly. Soon, he had enough money to drop a couple of successful mixtapes, and he was eventually able to start his label, called Roc-a-Fella Records, where he started to manage his music group and win multiple awards, not just as a musician but as a producer as well. He’s won multiple Grammys, Bet, Billboards, MTV, People’s Choice, and even NCAACP awards for his brilliance on the mic. But one of his bigger achievements is becoming one of the first black billionaires, even though, he had to overcome an immense amount of adversity during his youth and most of his adulthood due to strenuous living conditions. However, with his grit and passion for his craft and mission to not remain in the same circumstances, he was able to bring not only himself but his family to greater heights.

How Can I Use This In My Job?

Grit: “perseverance and passion for long-term goals”

Immersion: action that involves hands-on experiences or work simulation in which people can apply their competencies and acquired knowledge.”

(Passion and Perseverance: Predictor of Performance)

Subsection 1

A recent meta-analysis as well as high-powered empirical studies have found a weak nonsignificant relationship between grit and various indicators of success.

However, counterarguments propose that the inconsistency between grit and the lack of data has occurred because grits measurement has not matched its definition

  • Grit predicts performance
  • Passion produces beneficial effects on performance through immersion
  • Several studies come to a similar conclusion that intensity of focus in a performance domain may in turn promote higher levels of performance.
  • Anecdotal evidence indicates that many highly preserving individuals achieve success only when pursuing goals they are passionate about.
  • For people to develop grit, they need to cultivate a growth mindset

The theoretical concept of grit was first introduced in 2004 by Angela Duckworth, a psychologist, and lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania. During her research on the subject, she developed her theory and defined grit as, passion and perseverance.

Findings on this topic have revealed that individuals with a stronger mindset tended to be grittier and that for people to develop grit, they need to cultivate a growth mindset.

If grit is a combination of passion and perseverance and it is developed through cultivating a growth mindset, then there must be a connection between grit, the expectancy theory, and self-efficacy. Expectancy represents the belief that producing a high level of effort will in turn result in the successful performance of a task. Our text explains that the probability of exerting a high level of effort for a task under expectancy ranges from 1 to 0, which then results in a specific level of performance. In the research article by (Jachimowicz, Wihler, Bailey, and Galinsky) titled, “Why Grit Requires Perseverance and Passion to Positively Predict Performance”, the authors found that passion produces beneficial effects on performance through immersion and that several studies come to a similar conclusion that intensity of focus in a performance domain may, in turn, promote higher levels of performance. Self-efficacy is defined as the belief that one has the capabilities needed to execute the behaviors required for a task.

If we combine these ideas, we get that an individual who is truly passionate about their work in a given job will become highly immersed in achieving the successful completion of a task. This means that passion fosters a high level of expectancy, and as we’ve learned before from the motivational force formula, “effort is directed toward behaviors when effort Is believed to result in performance (expectancy), performance is believed to result in outcomes (instrumentality), and those outcomes are anticipated to be valuable (valance). To conclude, a gritty individual does have an extremely high level of motivation and according to the Goal-setting theory, if a highly motivated employee is assigned a specific and difficult goal, it will result in higher levels of performance than assigning easy or do-your-best goals.

Why Perseverance Trumps Intelligence and Education in Entrepreneurs (Yovany)

According to the American Psychological Association Dictionary of Psychology, grit “may be more relevant than intelligence in determining a person’s high achievement.” In other words, grit is more important than intelligence when starting a business. This is because entrepreneurship is a challenging and often unpredictable journey. It requires individuals to take risks, overcome obstacles, and persist when things go left. While intelligence is still certainly important in some areas of entrepreneurship, such as problem-solving and strategic thinking, it is not enough to ensure success. Entrepreneurs with grit are more likely to be resilient in the face of setbacks, bounce back from failure, and learn from their mistakes. They are also more likely to have the passion and dedication needed to see their vision through to completion, even when the road ahead is uncertain and challenging.

Starbucks is considered to be the most successful coffee shop in the world, with around 10 million people drinking it every day. Its former CEO, Howard Schultz, played a significant role in making Starbucks what it is today, but it was his grit and determination that truly enabled him to achieve success. When Schultz joined the company, it was just a small coffee bean roaster in Seattle, and he had the vision to transform it into a global brand. However, he faced resistance from the company’s founders and board members, who were hesitant to change the focus to coffee beans and equipment. Despite this pushback, Schultz persisted and eventually convinced the company’s leaders to expand into serving coffee beverages and opening more stores. He encountered many challenges, including economic recessions, competition from other coffee chains, and internal company conflicts, but his determination allowed him to overcome these obstacles and keep growing the company. Schultz’s vision and determination eventually paid off, as Starbucks grew to become a global coffee chain with nearly 35,000 stores worldwide. Schultz’s story teaches us that if we stay determined and keep going, even when things get tough, we can achieve success in starting and growing a business. He never gave up, even when faced with obstacles and opposition, and his perseverance enabled him to turn his vision into a reality. This is a great example of how having grit and determination can help us overcome challenges and achieve our goals when starting a business.
