Sequential Narrative

Our fourth project required us to use the material we had learned in class to develop and create our own sequential story. We had to compose a chapter or story in which we play the role of an everyday hero. Additionally, we had to use the three drawings we created from Project Three by either redrawing them or incorporating photographs into the composition.

For my story, my hero is the Gift Master and she uses her handy-dandy-memory-master to recall a memory of conversations she’s had with her friends and family to help her find the perfect gift for Christmas. I’ve always had the gift of being a great gift giver and usually that comes from listening to and paying attention to others when they speak about their daily lives, their interests, and treasured memories. I take what I hear and try to find a unique gift that brings joy to them and makes them feel heard and seen. I incorporated my three drawings by photographing them and carefully cutting and gluing them into my composition.

Atmospheric Perspective

For assignment three, we were to explore linear and atmospheric perspectives through the use of a variety of media. We were introduced to the crowquill pen, watercolor pencils, and terracotta pencils in this project. I had never used watercolor pencils before and really enjoyed using them. I struggle with perspective and am pleased with how my 1 and 2-point perspective drawings came out, but I am less pleased with my atmospheric. I struggled with that one the most, as it was difficult to portray the difference in value with the hills and valleys and different grasses and trees.

Altered Book

Mixed Media

The purpose of the altered book project was to alter, disassemble, or destroy an existing book, and then reassemble it in an original and creative way. The book I chose was The Little Prince or Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. I chose it because when the project was first introduced, it was the first thing that popped into my head. I wasn’t sure why because I didn’t grow up with this book, but I’d heard the story in 2016 during my junior year of college and fell in love with it. I knew I could get really creative with using this book and while I hated to destroy it, I’m so pleased with how it came out.

For the little prince himself, I used some air dry clay to sculpt his head, hands, and feet and used a wire to connect them all together. I hand-sewed his outfit out of felt and used acrylic to paint his face, hair, hands, and feet. I used a semi-circle of foam for the planet and covered it in casting wrap then painted it with acrylic. I added strips of pages from the book to add the effect of the book crawling out in a 3-dimensional way.

The stars hanging was the trickiest part and what I wish could look cleaner. I used a thread rack and hot glued it to the book, then used a clear stretch cord to attach the stars, which were glued onto foam core board.

I’m overall very happy with how this project turned out and was happy to not have to completely mutilate this precious book.

Collage

The purpose of this project was to find a group that we felt compassionate about and create a public service announcement poster to encourage a particular audience to feel compassion or more compassion for our chosen group. For the poster, we were to create a collage using only hand-cut materials and glue. My focus was on women/young girls having compassion for themselves and other women because it’s something I personally have been trying to focus on more of myself.
