My name is Laura Smith and I am an electrical engineering major with a focus on photonics. I discovered my interest in STEM when I took the engineering pathway in high school and found analyzing circuit maps and constructing basic circuit boards to be the most fun. I was actually a business major for my first year at Georgia State University – Perimeter College because I also enjoy managing products and business strategy. However, I switched to engineering because I missed how it challenged and fascinated me. Now, I am a sophomore at Perimeter College currently conducting research on laser diode efficiency with a special focus on the business impact.
Regarding a few of the many things I am excited about for SWE, I am looking forward to listening to keynote speaker Joannie Fu, who has experience in engineering and business which aligns with my interests. I am also thrilled to connect with company representatives at the career fair for the opportunity to obtain an internship and increase my skillset as an engineer. Lastly, I am looking forward to connecting with women in engineering and technology from all over the country to increase my global awareness and expand my community. I am thrilled for this opportunity and I am incredibly grateful to embark on this journey with my brilliant and dedicated peers.
