I read an article called Gender Terror, Gender Rage by Kate Bornstein; It was basically about how heterosexual america treat transgender people and all of the problems with it. and it made me realize how shitty we are as a country for not living up to the standards that we clearly have stated in our national anthem as “the land of the free and the home of the brave”. We are all to defend this title if we are standing up for our country against other countries, and we aren’t afraid to literally fight for it. So why is it so incredibly different when we apply the title to the citizens of this country? If we’re physically willing to fight for the citizens of this country against another, why does that idea suddenly change when you find out that they aren’t sticking to the socially acceptable sexual status quo? We don’t allow ourselves to accept that heterosexuality as the norm is learned, not natural. We can’t just say that heterosexuality is normal and homosexuality is not normal and those are the only two things that exist and one is right and the other is wrong and if you don’t follow our hegemonic norms then you’re an outcast. Excuse me, we are not living in Mean Girls, America; so drop the Gretchen Wieners attitude and stop with the “You Can’t Sit With Us” mentality and accept that we are a country filled with beautiful people, beautiful practices, and an infinite amount of differences. Yes, differences. Not faults, not wrong practices, not the wrong way, differences. Transgender people along with the entire LGBT community, hell the entire populations of the United States should be able to live in the home of the free, and now that they truly are free to express themselves, and be the happiest version of themselves. Would you take my pottery, or my black nail polish, or my ombre hair, or my Miley Cyrus twerking sweatshirt away from be because society suddenly deems self-expression as deviant? No. Why not? Because that is absolutely absurd, (and if anyone tries touching my Miley sweatshirt they will lose that hand and their sanity in the process) because I have every right to be free, and every single person in this country. I do understand that I have quite the advantage because I am a white, female, who has the opportunity to get an education, and comes from a nuclear family, but why should that make me any more entitled to my freedom over a black transgender male to female who grew up in foster care and was only able to get her GED? It makes zero sense but because of these gender defenders who refuse to listen to what anyone has to say and what actually makes sense, we are hurting innocent people who are trying to express themselves. Not just transgender people either, all people! I have gay aunts who mean the world to me, they have bene together for 35 years, and legally married for 3 years. They are the greatest, kindest, and most caring people in the world, and absolutely everyone who meets them agrees, but as soon as a homophobic asshole finds out that they are partners they look at them as if they are the spawn of Satan. How does what someone does in their personal life, and their personal preferences effect you? Oh right, they don’t. Maybe I’m just a hippie who loves everyone and radiates positive vibes, but that’s what you get when you have a child from two hippies straight out of Woodstock. Everyone should open their minds, their hearts, and just focus on sunshine and stellar vibes. Hippies rock, and they don’t discriminate so I proudly rock the label.
