The power of this image comes mainly from the spatial arrangement of the objects, and the shallow focus on the middle ground. The foreground of the photo features a boy sitting on the turret of what appears to be a destroyed tank. The foreground is blurry as the focus is on the middle ground. The middle ground features the rubble of a desecrated city and a dead tree. The background contains more rubble. The most interesting and powerful part of the image is the boy on the tank who takes up at least half of the image, and thus more prominent than the rest of the image. However the boy is out of focus, which makes the “reader” literally look past the boy on to the wreckage of the city. This placement states that both the people and the culture in Syria are devastated by the war. Although the external suffering of the people is immense and many have perished the ones who survived have nowhere to go. The residents are lacking in shelter and basic amenities. The main purpose of this image is most probably to raise support for Syrian refugees.
