The “Three Drawings” project provided a unique opportunity to explore various perspectives, namely one-point, two-point, and atmospheric, as well as different mediums and art styles. We started with the analysis of lines and angles in reference images, this helped us grasp a deeper understanding of spatial representation and how to convey distinct atmospheres within each piece.
For my one-point perspective drawing, I chose to illustrate the interior of a subway car using ink and a quill. This medium allowed me to capture the dynamic and confined space of a subway, emphasizing the convergence of lines towards a single vanishing point. The choice of black ink on white paper heightened the contrast and added a sense of depth to the composition. To add more shading I used a water and ink mixture with a paintbrush to create a wash, which I was able to layer as the ink dried.
For my two-point perspective, I used a watercolor to depict a cityscape in Sweden. The use of watercolors allowed me to experiment with vibrant colors and subtle gradients to convey the play of light and shadow. I aimed to create a sense of depth and dimension within the urban landscape. The choice of a city in Sweden was linked to the assignment of making something related to either a place we would like to live or visit, or where our family was from.
For the atmospheric perspective drawing, I selected colored pencils on black paper to illustrate the interior of a museum. This choice of medium and background helped me evoke a mysterious and ethereal ambiance within the artwork. The contrast of bright colors against the dark background created a visually striking effect, emphasizing the interplay between light and shadow. The atmospheric perspective was heightened by a sort of uneasy and warped feeling that was formed from the different “layers” of the room.
The “Three Drawings” was a great refresher of different perspectives and mediums. From the meticulous lines of the subway car to the vibrant watercolors of a Swedish cityscape and the ethereal atmosphere of a museum, each piece aimed to showcase my evolving understanding of spatial representation and artistic expression. Through this project, I have not only honed my technical skills but also developed a deeper appreciation for the power of perspective in conveying unique narratives within visual art.
