For this project, we focused on creating a still-life drawing emphasizing value. Our objectives were to utilize drawing tools to achieve a full range of value, observe how light falls on objects, and replicate value patterns on a 2-dimensional surface. We began by laying out a light mid-grey veil of value using vine charcoal. Then, we used an eraser to selectively remove charcoal, gradually adding more material to achieve a full range of tones.
Starting with conditional value, we avoided extreme darks or lights at the beginning. We primarily used vine charcoal and erasers for the initial stages, identifying and adding large groups of shadows while erasing out large groups of lights. As the drawing progressed, we used charcoal pencils and compressed charcoal to establish values and achieve a full range of values from black to white of the paper.
Reflecting on the project, it was an opportunity to refine our observational skills and experiment with different drawing techniques to capture the subtleties of light and shadow in a still-life setting. I found it very helpful for further understanding lighting, valuer, and shape.
