This project challenged us to create a wearable protective armor that addressed a social issue close to our hearts. Using materials like Rigid Wrap, cardboard, and found objects, I meticulously crafted each component of the armor with attention to detail and symbolism. After extensive brainstorming sessions, both individually and in class, I decided to focus on crafting armor for individuals lacking access to affordable medical care, aiming to shed light on the exploitation by pharmaceutical companies.
Once I identified my target audience, I began sketching designs for potential armor pieces. One of the key elements I developed was a pair of wrist cuffs or gauntlets, symbolizing empowerment for the wearer to stand up against large corporations, such as insurance companies, and advocate for their needs. Using Rigid Wrap, I molded the wrist forms before painting them and adding intricate details like ribbons and a caduceus symbol.
Additionally, I created a “pill purse” from a plastic clamshell food storage container, designed to resemble a classic color block pill pattern. I adorned it with a dollar sign and added handles made from ribbon. Inside, I included healthcare information and educational pamphlets to empower individuals to educate themselves about their health needs.
Lastly, I made a pair of glasses that are intended to shield the wearer from seeing the negativity and high costs of medicine.
