This project was an opportunity to deepen our understanding of form and further develop our physical art skills. It encouraged us to expand our horizons beyond traditional sculptural methods and explore the versatility of wire as a medium.
To begin, I selected some of my favorite insects and those I found intriguing for their unique characteristics. In my sketchbook, I meticulously documented my research findings and brainstormed ideas. I experimented with various sketches and support drawings, including detailed renderings of live beetles. After thorough research on my chosen insects—beetle, mantis, and moth—I began translating my ideas into wire sculptures, starting with rough formations. I created a silver, wire form of a new insect, which has movable wings!
