The goal of this project was to create abstract folded paper drawings on toned paper, focusing on understanding light, and improving observational skills. With materials like charcoal, erasers, and drawing paper, I followed a few steps to bring my idea to life.
First, I made a 3D paper model by cutting, folding, and joining paper. Then, I sketched about 20 thumbnails to explore different compositions. Once I decided on one, I toned the paper with charcoal and set up my model with a light source to capture shadows and highlights. Using charcoal pencils and vine charcoal, I slowly added light and shadow to create depth. The project lasted two weeks, we spent the first meeting building our paper models and sketching thumbnails. In the next session, we focused on refining our drawings on toned paper. By Week 12, we finished our artworks and had a critique session to share reflections and feedback.
