The Many Layers of New York City (From My Perspective)

With its wide variety of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options, and tourist attractions, there’s a little bit of everything for everyone in New York City, making it one of the most visited cities in the world.

Many visitors come for the food, often all things “New York-style” like the pizza and bagels that the city is known for, and they don’t stop there once they’ve had their fill. The city also has numerous cultural neighborhoods like Chinatown and Little Italy for those who want to try foods from around the world. There’s no shortage of food to try in New York as there’s bound to be food stands everywhere you go.

Many people also visit New York City because it’s the home of Broadway theatre and the Metropolitan Opera, some of the best stage productions that the industry has to offer. People who come for the entertainment can also watch some of their favorite late night talk shows as part of their audiences, though the process of scoring tickets is very competitive. For visitors on a budget, the city also has lots of movie theaters, showing anything from the latest blockbusters to indie films. New York cinephiles will likely recommend the AMC theater in Lincoln Square as it’s the home to one of the largest IMAX screens in the world.

Another reason people visit New York is to see pieces of history with their own eyes, anything from walking across the Brooklyn Bridge or through Central Park, taking a ferry to the Statue of Liberty, paying respects at the 9/11 Memorial, and observing over 5,000 years of art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Additionally, New York City is one of the largest business cities in the world, meaning that many people live or come here for work. It’s especially big in the world of publishing since every publishing house of the “Big Five” is headquartered here.

Before heading out to the Big Apple, make sure you’ve saved up enough money to make it through your trip because the large population, high demand for housing and food, and extensive public transportation system makes New York City a very expensive place to live and quite the tourist trap. Eating out and taking the subway every day really adds up!
