Interior Built Environment Description: Georgia Aquarium

IMG_5293[1]At the Georgia Aquarium, located in Downtown Atlanta, there are many sights to see. It has been the largest aquarium in the world since it was built in 2005. When you first walk in, you enter into a sort of lobby type area where you can see all of the different galleries the aquarium has to offer. The lobby area is in the center of the aquarium with the galleries and the food court extending off of it which have big signs over them that can not be missed. There are six different galleries at the aquarium right now, and those are: Cold Water Quest, Ocean Voyager, Tropical Diver, Dolphin Tales, River Scout, and Aquanaut Adventure. All of the galleries are wheelchair accessible. There is a ramp for one which makes it possible for people in wheelchairs to get to it. Overall, the openness of the aquarium makes it easily accessible to all of its patrons. Adults, children, people with disabilities, and elderly people all come enjoy the Georgia Aquarium.

Throughout the aquarium there are many things to look at it. Not only do they have fish and other animals that live in water, they also have a penguin exhibit and otters. When walking through the galleries, there is continuously something to look at. There are tanks every five or so feet. Next to every tank and exhibit, there are plaques stating what fish or animal are in the tank or exhibit and some information about the fish or animal, like where they come from. There are also several tunnels and looking holes made specifically for children. Everything in the aquarium is made so that children are able to see well and get to experience everything they have to offer.

In the aquarium, there are a lot of blues and earthy tones. These colors made me feel more relaxed, and like I could take my time looking at all of the different exhibits. Even with all of the little children running around and being loud, there was a sense of calmness. There was also music playing in each of the galleries that made it have a more soothing vibe. The Georgia Aquarium would be a good place to go for a laid back day with the family.

IMG_5231[1]I found this tank at the Georgia Aquarium interesting because it has props in it with the fish. It easily draws people’s attention to it with the “Shipwreck” label above it and the interesting boat inside of the tank. Children would be very fascinated by this exhibit. The Georgia Aquarium utilizes designs like this throughout the exhibits to catch one’s eye.

Video Clip

This clip is of another main attraction at the Georgia Aquarium. I took this while going through a tunnel that is underneath the largest tank at the aquarium. This tunnel allows fish, sharks, and other animals to swim above and on the sides of people visiting the aquarium. It also has a moving walkway that goes through the tunnel which enables people to enjoy the views without worrying about possibly walking into someone.

Video Clip

This video is of one of the bigger areas that you can watch the fish swim by. The main aspect of this video I would like to point out is the handicap mat on the floor that reserves that spot for people in wheelchairs to sit and be able to watch. These mats are placed in front of all of the big viewing areas making it possible for people in wheelchairs to easily view the animals.

I took this picture because it shows the intentions of the design in this section of the Georgia Aquarium. In this area of the aquarium, the walls are made to look like rock, and it makes you feel like you are not inside a building in downtown Atlanta. There is even a waterfall to make it feel more like the outdoors.

Video Clip

This Video is of one of the many features created especially for children. It is a tunnel that goes underneath the penguin habitat. It gives views of the penguins from different angles. This tunnel is a way that the Georgia Aquarium can catch the interest of children and make their experience more fun.

Video Clip

This video is of the otter in its habitat at the Georgia Aquarium. The habitat for the animal is made to look realistic and there is plenty of water for them to swim. This view of the otter is not the only one available to guests. There were three other glass windows to watch them through.

IMG_5264[1]This was one of the main attractions at the Georgia Aquarium. It was big and open where many people were able to see the manta-rays and sharks swim by. There was seating for people to be able to just sit and watch. There was also an area in front of the seating where kids were able to get a closer look. It made watching the animals very convenient.
