Blog Post 17 Does SI Really Help?

I have never felt like I was a good writer. When Jessica Weaver came to my English 1102 class to talk about tutoring for Dr. Crowther class, I was very relieved. Coming into 1102 I felt like I was a bit rusty writing because it has been almost a year since I took English 1101. The first meeting for SSI was very fun and helpful. I was able to talk about my fears of writing and what I desired to get out of English 1102. Being able to have someone listen and offer me advice was very helpful. Talking to Jessica also encouraged me to ease the fear I had in my mind about writing with the hope that I would do well in English 1102.

As our meeting continued, Jessica made the tutoring very useful by having an agenda of the things we needed to get done for Essay 1, like looking for articles because it was a bit time-consuming. The next meeting she encouraged us to begin an outline of our paper and worked with me to strengthen my thesis statement. She always gave the best advice on how to better improve my paper, whether it was grammatically or the structure of my writing. Jessica never failed to provide me with the best ideas when I would have writer’s block or when I had a difficult time writing what I wanted to say. I was always nervous before turning in essay 1, and she made me realize that I shouldn’t worry because I put a lot of effort and hard work, so I was going to do great.

Our session for essay 2 was very helpful to me. I was a bit confused on what we were doing and how many papers we needed to turn in. Jessica was able to simplify everything and explained to me what I needed to turn in by the deadline. She was kind enough to break everything down for me step by step and have me complete 1 task every session to have my chapter summaries and keyword assignment complete. I was grateful to have her by my side in every step of the way for the assignment.

So does SI help? I would have to say 10x yes! I honestly don’t know where I’d be without Jessica this semester. She is the best leader, and I was very glad to have the opportunity to get this far with her. She has tremendously helped with my essays so far, and I hope she continues to provide her assistance for the last few essays. She makes all the sessions very useful and always leaves me walking out the door thanking her and feeling confident about the essays I have to write. I can honestly see how my grade has been impacted by the weekly sessions and the incredible help of Jessica.
