Course Description

Course Description

Second in a two-course sequence, English 1102 uses the skills developed in English 1101 to identify and analyze the elements of a rhetorical situation and personal empowerment through writing to teach students how to enter the academic writing discourse community.  To do this, English 1102 develops research and writing skills that culminate in a sustained persuasive argument.

In this specific course, students are asked to first familiarize themselves with a specific journal in order to get a better feel for what academic research writing in the field they desire to enter looks like.  The course then asks students to engage in digital humanities methods in order to get a feel for a specific method and what counts as evidence and research questions when using that specific method.  Digital humanities methods are used here so diary-rrstudents can continue to ask questions about the journal they have chosen while getting the feel for the particular method.  Finally the course asks students to embark on their own argumentative paper using their own research question and an appropriate research method.
