To fully convict Syed, the procecution used the fact that Adnan was the only suspect that fits the description and has opportunity to kill Hae Min Lee. According to a detective on the investigation, the suspect profile has to be someone young, near the victims age, and had a known relationship with Hae. However, the suspects that fall into that category is Adnan and Don. Adnan was Hae’s ex-boyfriend so they had a known relationship in the past. Don, on the other hand, is Hae’s boyfriend at the time when she was killed (Chaudry).
Don was dismissed at the time since he had a alibi, working at Lenscrafters. Don’s alibi is mostly substantial since the employee ID numbers on the time cards were inaccurately labeled for Don, so there isn’t hard proof that he was working at the time of the murder (Ripley).
So this means that there is equal motive for Don and Adnan based off the standard’s set by the prosecution. There seems to be equal reason to look into both suspects fairly, but one of them was dismissed so early into the investigation (Engel).
