AI’s Creepy Hands

AI has been touted as a “master of all trades.” It has a broad knowledge base and has been trained using voluminous databases. It is capable of performing complex and simple tasks much faster than humans. This explains why a significant number of people are worried about AI potentially replacing their roles in the workforce. Artists are very vocal about this possibility because people have begun making art with AI. The three memes displayed communicate the opinion that art is complicated, and AI is not up to the task of producing it. These memes represent the shared experience of those creating art with AI. Crafting realistic hands in artistic works is an important part of art – humans can do it, but AI is struggling. Memes are popular with content creators, allowing them to use humor and satire to raise awareness of AI’s shortfalls. Before seeing the distorted hands on YouTube, I had not noticed this problem. But when I asked AI to generate an image of a pair of hands, this is what I got.

Adding a white or red Artificial Intelligence acronym to this image will create a powerful standardized meme for this social issue. While these memes reveal a serious problem with hands in art generated by AI, they also engage readers with relatable content. The distorted hands displayed in all the images grab the readers’ attention. Each meme also has AI prominently displayed, which effectively exposes the irony of “AI perfection.”

Using memes to display the limitations of AI when used to create art that features hands is an example of critical tech commentary. The subgenre digital cultural criticism is also used to show how AI is reshaping art and impacting our creativity. While the memes poke fun at AI, Manovich thinks the real challenge to art is continuous originality and unpredictability which are the underlying forces of web 2.0 culture.
