Unit Example

The purpose of this unit plan is primarily on teaching students on how to apply theorists to a text and to avoid teaching Poe’s works as morality tales and to, instead, build upon the students’ skills of critical analysis through the application of theory. Rather than imposing moral judgments, I am interested in letting students draw the conclusion that either: the confessions were motivated by guilt from the Superego of their own volition, or alternatively—students may draw the conclusion that “Perverseness” motivated the confessions. Regardless, I have students that have learned to apply external theory to a text, make their own opinions based on it, and support their opinion with textual evidence.
