Week One: Career Aspirations

My career aspirations truly began in my junior-year English class in high school. It started as a simple, single conversation in which a friend, who had decided she would major in Musical Theatre, told me I would make a great PR agent. From then on, as I looked into the career paths, I found myself constantly inching towards a career that involved media in some form.

At first, I was drawn to being a press officer in politics. That was until I realized how aggravating a life surrounded by politics could be. Then, I thought about some of the terrible PR and media moves celebrities often make and found my attention wandering there. Ultimately, I found the answer to where I would want to focus my career path right in front of me: sports.

Sports have always been a part of my life, and I find that a lot of the media I interact with is sports-based. After college, I aspire to work with a sports team or sports organization for their media team. I am most interested in working with the football (soccer) field, seeing as it is the sport I am most knowledgeable in and captures my attention the most.

After researching, I found that most people working for a team’s media have a degree in one of three major areas: journalism, communications, and marketing. Thus, the Journalism, Communications B.A. program I am currently in is optimal for my future career path. I will also need to be up to date on trends in social media, business writing, and digital publishing, and know how to respond to fans. Knowing how to publish and promote content will be vital to working in sports media.

While obtaining my degree will put my foot in the door, a career in sports media is heavily based on connections and experience. I intend to get an internship in my related field sometime in my last two years here at GSU and make the most of my resources here at the university. I will need to get more comfortable with networking and seeking out opportunities.

Lastly, with Atlanta’s growth in sports, specifically football, it makes it the perfect place to be in order to fulfill my career goals. With our own MLS team and the development of Team USA’s soccer moving down here, I am optimistic about the chances of getting a career in sports media. Though, it is coming quickly, I aspire to somehow work during the 2026 World Cup here in Atlanta, even if the job is small. Anything to make my dreams a reality.
