Inside/Outside
For Project III:Inside/ Outside the class was required to create a free-standing sculpture made from a bar of soap and air-dry clay in order to increase our understanding of the abstract idea of inside/outside. The process of creating the sculpture first began by carving a bar of soap. The soap had to be carved in a way that makes it appear organic and unrecognizable as a bar of soap. The reason this was important was because the subtractive qualities of the soap have to easily connect to and merge with the additive form of the clay. While carving my soap, I made sure to turn and rotate it, slowly carving away the original form of the bar. To assure that the bar of soap had distinct subtractive qualities, I carved out and refined several holes into the already completely carved soap. The clay portion of the project warranted a different method to complete. The air-dry clay had to be worked on very quickly and needed texture added to it in order for its additive characteristics to mesh with the bar of soap well. I wanted my clay to have the appearance of a monster’s claw so I created fake scales by cutting into it with a toothpick. In the end, my main theme for my sculpture was the emergence of a monster from a secret cave
