Ten Ways of Looking at a Piece of Paper
For our first project in the Three-dimensional design course, the class had to create 10 sculptures made exclusively out of 10 sheets of copy paper. The project was described as 10 Ways of Looking at a Piece of Paper. We were allowed to create the sculptures in any which way possible. Because of this, I ended up making pieces of art that I wouldn’t think was possible with a sheet of paper. What I did before even starting the project was to plan out the figures I would settle on creating, as well as the central theme I would use to frame my sculptures. I ended up settling on everyday objects in my life as a central theme. For what my sculptures would be specifically, I decided on creating a fern, boot, seaweed, playground, pufferfish, firefly, seashell, deep-dish pizza, dynamite, and a campfire. The general creation of the sculptures involved a lot of steps. I had to create each figure by painstakingly folding, cutting, wetting, gluing, and learning from mistakes. I’d say that the hardest process to wrap my head around was the creation of the sculptures by using the entirety of a single piece of paper, there were ideas which I ended up having to scrape because they didn’t use the complete piece of paper in an effective way. So far I’d say that the project turned out better than I expected, its being well received by some of my classmates. In the end, I do believe that I learned skills in applying my imagination to everyday household objects. Because of this project, I realized that everything really has the potential to be turned into a magnificent piece of art.
