Let’s change the Color in Colorism

Same race discrimination has to stop!

People in black communities and other Hispanic communities often separate into two groups. There are the lighter complexion groups who are more glorified in beauty than the darker complexion. This way of thinking drains people’s idea of true beauty in every person. Colorism is an important discussion to have because more people will feel more comfortable in their skin. The first feature you notice about someone is their skin color and your mind automatically categorizes that person into a certain social group. We look up to the lifestyle we see in movies on television and in music.

Colorism in children

Children represent the new life of our worLd. It is our job to make sure they grow up knowing that difference and variety is beautiful. CNN‘s Anderson Cooper highlights a project that reveals how children view racial beliefs, attitudes, and preferences. Studies show that younger children get taught these views very young and only grow out of it when they are older. That says a lot.

Colorism in Entertainment

We look up to the lifestyle we see in movies on television and in music. Television feeds the brain with all sorts of information. There are so many classic movies that show colorism and the black people are selling it to our own people. It is 2020 and more and more people are facing the truths behind colorism. We should stop feeding colorism to people and send a message of empowermentt instead.

What can we do to help?

People of color struggle with skin discrimination through entertainment, jobs, and decades of history. The more years pass people realize that there is a problem within the ethnic communities. To stop colorism from passing on into more generations I think it is best that we teach children that color is normal. the younger generation needs to now that color of your skin is only a small part that makes you beautiful.

Where is the article from?  How do you know it is a reliable source? Does it have a known political bias?

The article is from a website called The Guardian. It is not a very popular website. They have trending topics on American opinions.  I can tell that this source is reliable because of the evidence given throughout the article. It has a known political bias also.

Who wrote the article? Does the author have any potential biases/conflict of interests (ETHOS)?  Who is the target audience? How can you tell?

A woman wrote this article and her bias is clear throughout the article because of her experiences she makes it clear of her statement in the argument. The target audience is poor, I can tell because of how she keeps referring back to herself.

How does the headline grab our attention?  Does it show any attempt to politicize the news item or appeal to a particular demographic?  Is it accurate or misleading (in relation to the content?)

The headline grabs my attention because it is a very common question that is hard to get answered. I feel like it appeals to the middle class, to the people who have the stability to be poor or be in the higher class. It is very accurate though.

‘Among the wealthy, biases allow society’s winners to believe that they got where they are by hard work alone’.Are there any pictures or graphics at the beginning of the article to preview the argument and/or give the argument a particular context

There is one image connected to the article and the description under it goes great with the article but the image is a little hard to understand.

Analyze the argument.  What is the main idea? Break down the argument into steps – what are the sub-arguments?

Evaluate the argument.  Is it logical (LOGOS)? Does it appeal to emotion (PATHOS)? What strategies does it use to persuade the reader?  What examples does it give? Are there any logical fallacies?

Evaluate the content and the sources. Does the article link to other relevant sources? Does it list sources at the end of the article?  Is it clear if the article is factual or opinion-based? How far can you get when you try to check the sources/background of the argument?

Blog Post #6

Colorism in the African American Community is interest if mine. My main argument would be, why is it a big issue, and how is it affecting younger generations.

In this famous television shows like this in the photo above, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The switched out a character in the show into a woman with a lighter complexion.

Colorism is an exciting topic for me because I am curious to know where this idea that lighter is better rooted. It is worse than racism. In my research, I found a few blogs expressing how they feel about the topic. To support my argument, I will need evidence of people affected by it. Some counter-arguments would be me saying that colorism does not affect the black community. Which is that colorism is more significant than racism, or is colorism a form of racism. A lot of people are affected by this. It also seems like people are afraid to talk about this topic. The biggest challenge is finding a counter-argument to go with my argument. Many celebrities follow this concept by bleaching their skin to make themself look “prettier” or to fit in in the entertainment industry. Ther are plenty more examples of colorism in our community, also when women or men with a lighter complexion get hired more often than people of darker skin. In this famous television shows like this in the photo above, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The switched out a character in the show into a woman with a lighter complexion.

Even though there was nothing wrong with the first Aunt Vivian, the producers thought they would make a better-looking family with a bright skin woman. Colorism is an unattractive trait that our black community has, and it stretches all across many situations.

War on Poverty

War on Poverty: Opposing Viewpoints

There is not an actual war, it’s a figure of speech to describe the disagreements about the aiding cause of poverty in the people of America. Is poverty a state of mind or is it America’s failing economical structure? More than half of America has experienced some exposure to poverty. The argument of poverty starts with the origin of why so many get stuck in this state. Most liberals believe that poverty is something that is outside of a person’s control and the conservatives believe that it is an internal problem that has to do with a person’s state of mind. Emily Etkins from the Cato Institute theorizes that part of the reason liberals and conservatives disagree about the causes of poverty and wealth is that they disagree about the extent to which personal choices or external forces directs people’s lives. The New York Times by Paul Krugman `” The G.O.P’s War on the Poor” and  David Wagner‘s book “Poverty and Welfare in America” give opinions on what conservatives and liberals believe is the correct way to end poverty. Both sides are very arguable but Wagner’s article is more argumentative because the majority of the population is more liberal and Wagner gives facts to back up all of his claims.

David Wagner’s book “Poverty and Welfare in America” published in Santa Barbara, California answers general questions about poverty in America. Wagner has written plenty of books surrounding the topic of poverty and politics. The book is reliable because it has evidence that can be backed by his sources. The political performance of this argument is very noticeable, he wants the audience to know that politics have a huge role in the views on the poor.

 THE WAR ON THE POOR
In the second chapter of David Wagner‘s book “Poverty and Welfare in America ” shows an external opinion on causes of poverty, he chose five causes of poverty and how it reflects on our economical weakness. In every claim poverty, he gives his statement then elaborates with factual evidence and cites his sources below them. He uses facts to clarify the myths of poverty being contributed through lack of education, Unemployment, and Discrimination. David Wagner is an African American man who has grown up and experienced poverty and has a strong view of the stereotypes and myths that have been painted about the poor.

The New York Times posted an article by  Paul Krugman “ The G.O.P’s The War on the Poor” to talk about how the conservatives think that the war on poverty should be handled. Krugman is very active in political affairs. He is an opinion columnist for the New York Times. The article is reliable because the New York Times is a very relevant news source, it has an open variety of opinions in it.

Krugman’s argument is that Many blue-collar whites still think that the poor are lazy and prefer to live off welfare. But as events in Maine show, such beliefs aren’t central to the war on the poor, which is mainly being driven by political elites that are motivated by ideology. Their political identities, not to mention their careers, are wrapped up in the notion that more government is always bad.So they oppose programs that help the poor partly out of a general hostility toward “takers,” but also because they hate the idea of government helping anyone.

And if they get their way, society will stop helping tens of millions of Americans who desperately need that help. In this excerpt from the passage, Krugman is trying to prove that the war on poverty will never change because the ideals to penetrate the problem are too repelling.

This image represents the Republican view and attempts to solve the issue of poverty in America.

“ The G.O.P’s War on the Poor”, shows an internal opinion on the causes of poverty and the opinions of republicans. Krugman gives an insight into the Conservatives’ belief that  America is full of takers and that no one wants to work just to live off of social programs. The fifth paragraph of Krugman’s article expresses the Republican’s idea to remove the programs in hopes to force Americans to find prosperity through hard work and determination. Krugman’s article uses an ethos set of writing by giving facts through Trump’s interviews and speeches that republican governors have made. Krugman is not defending the conservatives in this article he is agreeing with the liberal side of poverty by fact-checking the conservatives his own opinions. The photo presented in the article is a picture of a woman leaving a food pantry in Bronx, New York. The Bronx is one of the poorest congressional districts and it has been this way for years. This picture ties along with the article by giving the audience a visual of what poverty is in America, a very known neighborhood that has been the same circulation on poverty for years, and no one is speaking out about it.

Although Krugman’s article doesn’t have tons of sources and charts it provides a more direct approach to the audience.  Krugman shortens the argument by saying that the war on poverty will never end because the arguments are too opposing. Wagner promotes that the Conservatives try to fix the problem but don’t really care as much about the people enough, just the money. War on poverty is a war that never ended in America.

How to use Sources

A source is anything you did not create or write it is to be used as evidence in making your work ethical effective and efficient. You know about sources, but did you know the true importance of bringing sources into writing has a lot to do with the credibility of your writing piece. Being in school gives you a lot of opportunities to work on your critical thinking skills which is important in making looking for sources a lot easier

Finding out if a source you are using is good or bad can all depend on the way you are trying to present the information. There are three correct ways to present sources correctly. Also all three needs to be cited correctly in order for it to be a correct source. Good source use means ethical, effective, and efficient source use. At the same time you are giving due credit to the creator of the source you’re using or engaging, you are making it work well with your words and ideas. Here is a video explaining how source are used.

http://https://youtu.be/cqXHO7bTPnw

You can paraphrase the authors information in your own words so that the meaning of your source shows clarity in your passage. When you paraphrase it is important to change the words but to keep the meaning. this is important because it shows that the writer understands the source and makes them credible to write about it.

Quotation is another example of bringing out sources. Quotations use the exact words from the source. Use quotation marks around the quotation if the source is less than four lines long. Use a block quotation if the source is more than four lines from a printed source.  block quotations are  to be used only when all of that information is necessary. Indent entire quotation by 5 spaces on the left. Do not use quotation marks. it is important that you use these

Summarizing is the most familiar use of information, you use this by giving a brief statement of the source you acquired. It gives the reader a better understanding of the author’s work with out having to read through the material because you gave away the main points already.

Fake or Fact News

Where do we get most of our information about the world around us?
Traditional news, social media or fake news websites, has no basis in fact, but is presented as being factually accurate. Social media usually catches your eye by click baiting you into believing news is true.

What signs can we look for to see if something is “fake news”?
Fake news is written and published usually with the intent to mislead in order to damage an agency, entity, or person, and/or gain financially or politically, often using sensationalist, dishonest, or outright fabricated headlines to increase readership. Similarly, click bait stories and headlines earn advertising revenue from this activity.

How do we identify reliable sources of information?
Not all written sources are reliable, no matter how sound their arguments may appear to be. To evaluate the reliability of a piece of writing, you must consider several issues related to the subject and to the person or publisher that presents it. Is the information current? Is it related directly to the topic it discusses? Does it provide sources for supporting ideas? Are these sources reliable? Is the purpose of the information to inform, to persuade, to sell, or even to entertain? Has the information been written and published recently? Does a date of publication appear? Finally, who is responsible for the information? Is an author or publisher listed at all?

Why is this important?
Social media users are highly subject to confirmation bias, the unintentional tendency to gravitate toward and process information that is consistent with existing beliefs. This can result in decision-making that ignores information that is inconsistent with those beliefs. When you don’t consume the media you are uninformed when you do consume the media you are misinformed.

What is the problem with “fake news”? What is it’s greater impact on society?
It’s not just making people believe false things—a new study suggests it’s also making them less likely to consume or accept information. Fake-news stories hurt people in other ways, too. False reports lead some parents to refuse vaccines for their children. Yet without vaccines, children can get deadly diseases. False stories about birth control can result in unplanned pregnancies or illness. Made-up stories about ethnic groups can lead to more discrimination. The less people know about current events, the less likely they’ll be able to make informed choices about public matters.

What is “information literacy:?
“Information literacy is a set of abilities requiring individuals to ‘recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.’As citizens we can try to be more aware of the things we read and not be so reliant on every piece of information that pops on the screen.

Study Tips to College Freshman

Studying can be difficult, I should know. I am the queen of procrastination! To make studying easier for us procrastinators it is important to know how your brain works, also how your brain process information. I bet you never heard about neuroplasticity? What about a growth mindset? If I was correct that is wonderful, and now you can practice both by reading the rest of this post.

What is a growth mindset and how is it different from a fixed mindset? A fixed mindset is a belief that others are gifted talents like intelligence and other things. In contrast, a growth mindset is a belief that learning more and studying can build the brain. It is the concept your brain gets stronger the more you exercise it. The next time you are studying hard think of it as a good workout at the gym. The more you do the easier studying becomes.

What on earth is neuroplasticity? Neuroplacisty is the belief that your brain has the ability to rewire. For example, repetitively choosing to study rather than binge-watching a new season of  YOU on Netflix. As you can see Neuroplacisty is not a fixed way of thinking because of the belief that you are constantly progressing new habits.

How do I feed my brain correctly? The first step to feeding your brain is to stop procrastinating! Set up a schedule to study every week and actually follow the schedule. Work at your own pace and things will flow smoothly. A great tip is that studying too hard can be overwhelming because you can forget what you studied. Study a little at a time and take small breaks in between. Also, different noise environments work differently for others. You could be in a very silent place and get extremely distracted if this is you try to balance the amount of background noise that works for you. remember your brain is a muscle and exercise makes you stronger.

Protect Us from Gun Violence

Project 4

November 11, 2019

This is my armor piece, I was very driven in making this project because of the awareness I could bring about gun violence in America. Too many people are being brutally murdered as early as 6 years old, too many innocent deaths are being snatched away, all because some one was to wreckless using a weapon. People should pay attention to the well being of others before the get behind such a powerful weapon.

The materials used in this project were a rigid wrap, clay, cardboard and cotton balls, and paint.
