Perosnal Cultural Heritage

My heritage is a combination of African and American cultures. I am not one without the other. I was raised to embrace this, and acknowledge that to truly move forward as a woman of color, loving myself, my roots, and paying homage to my people is my responsibility. It may sound silly to those who are unaware, or uninclined to care, but part of my culture, especially as a woman is hair. Black women are known within our many cultures and sub-cultures, for our variety and versatility with our hair.  It is unique to us, different, difficult, and daringly gorgeous all at once. Something that is very much part of our history is the act of braiding hair. African, as well as African American women traditionally wear braids, in part because it is best for our hair type. This is something true to my heritage, true to the women I come from.

To think of culture and heritage as a series of moving parts, constantly moving and growing from one another, and with each passing generation, at the foundation, and heart of my heritage, is the black woman. We are the tastemakers for our daughters and sons, the composers to the symphony our blood listens and plays to, and the water that allows our family tree to continue to grow and thrive. The painting is one representation of the hard work and sacrifice we put into caring for our families. There are also three women shown, a portrayal of how when we put in work, whatever it is, we not only have the same goal, but we do it as a community. In black culture, this is just another word for family.

Lavender Jazz, Kaaria Mucherera, 2007

Music is in my blood. Every woman in my family can sing, and for generations it has been the tie that has kept us bound. My great, great grandmother has twelve children, and from those twelve children sprung many more children, who each travelled and made lives for themselves all over the world. Music has kept us close despite our distance, because it is through music that we reconnect every two years as a family. We celebrate our bloodline through song, through contact, food, and through stories of our family history. My family stands firm at over two hundred people, and we travel for our family reunions to accommodate everyone. Our music travels with us, because it is within us, and it is a staple of my family, and where we come from. Music is very much part of my heritage.

I Haz Meme

Memes can be considered art. I think social media produces art daily, and the scope of what is thought to be art is evolving all the time. I think memes are a fun way to make light of situations, and shine light in situations that are difficult to discuss. Memes can be political, social, fun, or anything else they need to be. Internet art, whether its on social media, or some other website, is supposed to convey a message. That is the purpose of art, memes are just a funny way to convey a message.

Personal Truisms

My personal truism is to get my heels on and keep strutting forward. It means to never falter in what I am, and who I am as a woman for a moment, and keep moving forward. Often when women have weak moments, or are going through rough times, they either isolate themselves, or temporarily let themselves go. Not even for a moment should either of those circumstances occur, ever. I have seen it happen, and I have experienced it first hand. I vowed not to make that mistake again, simply for my personal well being. I am a lot stronger than that, even when I have felt weak. I know one way women have expressed strength throughout history is by looking how they feel, or how they want the world to think they feel. If you dress in a powerful way, whatever that means to whoever it is, people will see that and treat you accordingly. The rest just requires the woman to keep moving forward in life. Once she is armed with one of the greatest assets she has, her signature look, she can move forward with her other assets, her mind and attitude. On the other hand, Jenny Holzer used what was popular at the time to create art that appealed to people and spoke for itself. She has helped inspire a great many other works of art because of her originality.

Contemporary Interpretation of a Classical Work

The content is of a woman in nature. She is holding a flower in one hand, and part of a tree in the other, as she is sitting down. The artist is Dante Rosetti, and he created the painting in the year 1880. The painting was created as an homage to his muse. The woman in the painting was his lover, and he painted her often. It embodies romanticism with the attention to detail in the shape of the woman, as well as the use of nature and colors. The painting can be looked upon with a contextual and feminist analysis. Contextually, the painting was accompanied by a poem that went on to describe the woman. The way she is portrayed in the poem, as well as in the painting, alludes to the intimate nature of their relationship.  This is appropriate considering the artist sought to capture the romance in the work. From a feminist perspective, the work is a bit cheeky. Considering the time in which the painting was created, the display of the woman in such a private and vulnerable way is both forward and rebellious. She is a woman alone with nature, a woman distracted by her own thoughts, and a woman who is made all the more feminine, given her relaxed posture. She is an object of desire because she is a vibrant figure in the small space, and is given a flower to emphasize her sweetness as a woman. The subject existed at a time when women where still expected to be loyal to their husbands and households, and yet she took her painter as a lover.

House on Fire/ Portait of Personal Items

I chose three things to take with me, one of my bags, a pair of heels, and my passport. All of these things are replaceable, but leaving with them would make surviving a disaster a lot easier. Identification is easy to replace if it is destroyed, but I know not one person who ever feels like replacing it. Then of course, I chose a pair of heels because most days I wear them anyway. Additionally, I chose of my statement bags. The bag is great because if I were in a hurry to get out, I would be taking something that is already holding other valuable items to me, like other identification, cash, and probably my cell phone. I could quickly get back on my feet with these things, and I would look good doing it. The passport is especially important because I travel so much, and the heels are important because I need something to walk in later. I would want someone to know, based off of these things, I am practical, fast on my feet, and fashionable.

A “Thousand” Words (Free Pass #2)

Paul Klee’s Sunset, created in 1930, is an abstract painting, with strong non-objective elements. This particular painting is not about a sunset at all. Music was the inspiration behind this painting. Klee uses color and geometric shapes to create balance. The dots represent movement, and create the illusion of movement as they are used in conjunction with vertical and horizontal lines to do so.

From an iconographic standpoint, the use of different geometric shapes, and how they are placed in the painting are clearly meant to symbolize harmony. Additionally, the use of lines and dots brings upon thoughts of rhythm. On the other hand, from a feminist standpoint, the texture of the painting stands out the most. Between the linear line structures, dots, and use of color, the overall texture of the painting is rough, almost chaotic. The artist experiments with a combination of stillness and movement, so perhaps the semi chaotic mood of the painting was intentional.

As far as my personal interpretation of the painting, I am not a fa.  The work of art is bland. The painting is about connecting with music and creating art that is abstract. Even though his work is abstract, his message is that through music, art made from music can be made clear, and is more easily seen because of the music.

If someone else were to look at this painting, they might notice the combination of light and dark colors, in addition to the light and dark spaces in the painting. This evokes an uplifting mood to the otherwise chaotic flow of movement present. This is a positive point for the work. My opinion on the painting however, remains unchanged.

Spectrum of Representation-Free Pass #1

Representational is more realistic, while abstract is more distorted. Abstract has similar elements to representational style, but is done in a more creative, less realistic way. On the other hand, non-objective is unclear, and not realistic at all.

Art in My Environment

The painting gives the impression of happiness. It is loving and mocking at the same time. The girl is surrounded by color, and yet also lit from within by a darkness, I would say this is a parody of what she wants the world to see her as, smiling and carefree, clutching an innocent toy. The theatre mask is a reference to the drama of the character of the girl, and the role she is playing in her pose. The yellow light around her is a point of sincerer joy, but is vastly overshadowed by darker colors that consume the large scale of the painting. The curved lines are whimsical, the unity of colors used on her body reflect inner turmoil.

The black and white art was intentionally made to have a lack of color. The quality of lines  shown are a variety, ranging thin in some areas, while they increase in thickness in other areas. The lines also create many organic shapes. While some lines are regular, others are more chaotic. The women are experiencing nature, but they are also in nature, and part of nature. They both have control in their elements, and show their inability to completely control their surroundings. There is also a negative space near the water that feels incomplete. It is intentional to represent air, something that exists with every other element, but cannot be seen.

Both the painting and sharpie drawing are original works of art created by me.

Art is a form of expression…

No automatic alt text available.

Art is expressive, creative, and personal. I think of art this way because that is how I feel about it, and how I interpret it in any form.

Art is, as a general qualifier, personal. It is unique to the person that produced the art.

My definition of art, and the modules definitions of art are very similar. I agree that art is transcendent of the observers personal experiences and explanations of what it means, while also relating back to human experiences, that are personal and can be explained by the average person. I think art can enlighten and intrigue people to experiences they were unaware of, or in new and unfamiliar ways, deeper ways.

Art is not always  physically beautiful. Beauty can come from the emotional, intellectual, or spiritual impact of art. Art can also be brutal, it can be crude or confusing. The value put in art is not always how pleasing it is to the eye, but to be pleasing to the eye, art can also be hard to look at. It can be gruesome, or too honest. Beauty in art comes from how much someone is drawn to it, how much they relate to it in their own way. Beauty is not a consideration for me in regards to art, the context of the message in the art, from the art, is more valuable. Beauty does not determine whether or not I view something as art.
