Contextually, the painting was accompanied by a poem that went on to describe the woman. The way she is portrayed in the poem, as well as in the painting, alludes to the intimate nature of their relationship.  This is appropriate considering the artist sought to capture the romance in the work. From a feminist perspective, the work is a bit cheeky. Considering the time in which the painting was created, the display of the woman in such a private and vulnerable way is both forward and rebellious. She is a woman alone with nature, a woman distracted by her own thoughts, and a woman who is made all the more feminine, given her relaxed posture.
