Contemporary Interpretation of a Classical Work

The content is of a woman in nature. She is holding a flower in one hand, and part of a tree in the other, as she is sitting down. The artist is Dante Rosetti, and he created the painting in the year 1880. The painting was created as an homage to his muse. The woman in the painting was his lover, and he painted her often. It embodies romanticism with the attention to detail in the shape of the woman, as well as the use of nature and colors. The painting can be looked upon with a contextual and feminist analysis. Contextually, the painting was accompanied by a poem that went on to describe the woman. The way she is portrayed in the poem, as well as in the painting, alludes to the intimate nature of their relationship.  This is appropriate considering the artist sought to capture the romance in the work. From a feminist perspective, the work is a bit cheeky. Considering the time in which the painting was created, the display of the woman in such a private and vulnerable way is both forward and rebellious. She is a woman alone with nature, a woman distracted by her own thoughts, and a woman who is made all the more feminine, given her relaxed posture. She is an object of desire because she is a vibrant figure in the small space, and is given a flower to emphasize her sweetness as a woman. The subject existed at a time when women where still expected to be loyal to their husbands and households, and yet she took her painter as a lover.

  1. You did a very good job of explaining the context of the original work and also recreating it. At least you used your imagination to re create it and was successful at getting it done. Good work.

  2. Cute – Your photographic reproduction is creative in its reversal of essential aspects of the original. I like that you’re wearing red (the opposite of green and its compliment) and are oriented in the other direction. This makes a nice counterpoint to the painting. I’m not sure where you were getting your information, however, as you don’t provide any link other than the one for the original image? The information included on this link – states that the woman was not his lover but his friends wife? A little more work to root out the basis of the work and reflect on the types of analysis would have better supported your creative interpretation.

  3. This was pretty great! Good recreation of the original work! I wished mine had been more crafty like this. GREAT JOB!
