Marta Train

This is a video I took of the Marta Train passing through Lenox Marta Station. The Lenox Marta Station is located on the gold line railroad tracks that travels to Doraville. When the train gets to the Lenox Station it usually takes off within 2 minutes so it is imperative that you get onto the train as quickly as you can to avoid being left and having to wait on the next train which usually takes about 15-20 minutes.

To get to the train tracks you have to travel down this escalator. One thing I noticed about Lenox Marta Station as opposed to other Marta Stations is that people seem to be more in a rush at the Lenox location. Some people run up the escalator and others may squeeze their way past you. Fortunately, this escalator is not super long like the Peachtree Center Marta Station so getting in and out of the Lenox Station is quick.

In order to enter the Lenox Marta Station you are required to swipe your breeze card on the designated area. Sometime people will use techniques to try to bypass this gate and some people are successful, but if you are caught you can expect a hefty fine. Marta has been struggling over the last couple of years with gaining a lot of profit so they need every penny that they can receive.

Annotated Bibliography #1

Winne, Mark. “The Bluff.” The Bluff: Channel 2 Goes into Georgia’s Biggest Heroin Market. Web. 05 Feb. 2016.

In this article the author, discusses how Atlanta neighborhoods by the name of English Avenue and Vine City also known as ‘The Bluffs’, have been left in the dark for decades. English Avenue and Vine City have been the biggest drug neighborhoods in Georgia for many years. Many residents living here have been begging for the city of Atlanta to help, but promises continue to be broken leading to very few improvements within the community. A famous resident to this neighborhood was Martin Luther King Jr. The author describes how even when MLK lived there the neighborhood was still run down and a haven for heroine. Channel 2 investigative reporter Mark Winne walked around interviewing different residents and he talked to two men that said ‘The Bluffs’ was a neighborhood in which it is so easy to get caught up in the drug lifestyle and how that lifestyle more than likely always leads to death or prison time. Residents of this area this area are concerned that the city of Atlanta will continue to spend money on projects like the new Falcons stadium, but continue to forget about them. I chose this source because WSBTV is a credible source and it is right here in Atlanta where I am focusing my research on Atlanta Georgia. I enjoyed reading this article because it really shows how the city of Atlanta has indirectly contributed to the downfall of this neighborhood by simply not doing anything.

Mártir, Vanessa. “Gentrified Brooklyn Is Not My Brooklyn.” The Huffington Post. TheHuffingtonPost.com, 16 May 2015. Web. 05 Feb. 2016.
In this article the author talks about how the Brooklyn that she grew up in was different from the Brooklyn now due to a term called ‘gentrification’. She explains that when she was growing up Brooklyn was not the cleanest or safest place to live, but that it always felt like home because of the struggles that everyone in the neighborhood dealt with. She goes on to say that when white people started moving into the neighborhood the atmosphere of Brooklyn changed and many residents were upset because it felt like white people came in and dominated and tore down the culture that was originally there. The author gave this definition the word “Columbus’ing” as it appeared that the white people came in out of nowhere and civilized the minorities. I chose this article from the Huffington Post because although this article is talking about gentrification in New York, it also happens here in Atlanta where I am doing my research. I did think one flaw this article had was that it did not really talk about how residents living in Brooklyn benefited from white people moving into the neighborhood.
McMillan, Tracie. “Gap in Diet Quality Between Wealthiest and Poorest Americans Doubles, Study Finds.” National Geographic. National Geographic Society, 2 Sept. 2014. Web. 05 Feb. 2016.
The author of this article, Tracie,  explains how there is a significant dietary difference between poor and healthy neighborhoods. She says that many residents living in poor neighborhoods are far more likely to be obese than a person living in a wealthy neighborhood. This is because in poor neighborhoods there tends to not be many grocery stores, but a lot of fast food restaurants around. The author explains that parents living in poor neighborhoods want their families to eat healthy, but when you are poor you have to eat the cheapest option and most of the times the cheapest option is the most unhealthiest one. Tracie McMillan goes on to say that in order to fix the obesity problem in poor neighborhoods more grocery stores and supermarkets have to open up in order to change the food environment. This problem is a nation-wide problem that also occurs here in Atlanta where I am doing my research. I believe this article is credible because for one National Geographic is a very credible source and I have driven in a bad neighborhood here in Atlanta where my aunt lives and there will literally be one grocery store within a 5 mile radius, but a fast food restaurant on every corner. I did not see any flaws within this article and I thought that it was very informative as to a normal person they won’t be able to see this problem, but once it’s brought to the spotlight everyone can finally see that it is an actual problem.

This is an outside view of the Lenox Marta Station. Lenox Marta Station is one of the busiest stations in Atlanta because it leads to a very popular mall by the name of Lenox. Outside of the Lenox Marta station you will find several good restaurants including Houston’s and a very nice hotel where people can stay and have easy access to transportation.

Tapestry of Space

In this summary Morton talks about how homeless people are not truly homeless. Morton says that they have homes, but that they are not stable homes due to the amount of ease that it takes to destroy their home. In the public’s eye some of the places where homeless gather are usually forgotten about and sometimes appear to be lifeless, but Morton says that she traveled down into the tunnel where the atmosphere there was very much alive. She blames “spectacle” for the general public not knowing about the lives that homeless people live.

Morton talks to one man that basically says that living underground can be challenging because there’s no guide or step by step process on living underground. He has to do what he thinks is best for his desired space to feel at home in his environment.  Morton also talks about a man named Bob who said that living in the tunnel wasn’t so bad and that it helped him kind out who he really was. Bob says that living in the tunnel usually has that physiological effect on everyone and he also says that if you stay in the tunnel too long it will eat you alive.

To go along with the physiological effects that the tunnel offers, it also offers a sense of security for people that live there. Sense the general public views living in tunnels as being dangerous there aren’t really a lot of outsiders that go down into the tunnels unless they plan on living there. A resident to the tunnel by the name of Manny, describes a time where he was being attacked and ran into the tunnel where the people attacking him would not enter. Another resident of the tunnel by the name of Larry, says that in most instances he feels safer living underground because there is not much going on down there. He says that living in homeless shelters and living out on the streets can be more dangerous than living underground.

With having a sense of security while living in the tunnels, a sense of feeling at home also comes along with living there. Morton describes how many people living in tunnels use art to help them feel more at home. In some of the art that Morton has in her pictures you can see that some of the tunnel residents have their names present on their artwork. They put their names in the artwork to make it known that that space is their home. To a normal person this might seem strange or ghetto, but we have to remember that the people at the very top of the totem pole also put their names on their homes as well.

I really enjoyed reading this article. It gave me a new perspective on homelessness that I had never seen before. To Morton this is what she would have wanted. To open peoples eyes to a new world. The thing that I thought to be most interesting was how some homeless people felt safer underground then above ground. I thought that was pretty interesting because in the general publics eyes its the complete opposite. Overall, I would recommend this article to a friend. We as people need to stop looking down on homeless people so much and just respect them for what they have even if its barely anything.
