Short Story 1

Jackie is walking through Chinatown. She comes across a restaurant called “Hong Kong’s Best” with it’s name running across a horizontal screen in neon lights on top of the restaurant’s building. She looks down at her smart watch with its screen flashing a green dot on it telling her she has reached the right place. Now that her destination has been confirmed, she walks inside through the motion sensors sliding doors.

Once inside, there is a screen connected to the front desk. It asks if whether or not she has a reservation, she touches the answer “no”. It then asks her how many people are in her “party.” She touches the number 1. It then asks her to type her name. She does that and touch “done”. The screen then flashes a message that her table will be ready momentarily.

She sits down in a chair in the waiting area where a TV in the wall plays re-runs of Seinfeld. Within a couple of minutes a hostess approaches her and asks if her name is Jackie. She replies with a yes and is escorted to her table. In the main dining area where she is seated, the only other guest is an old guy slurping soup in a far corner. She looks down at her table’s screen for the menu. She goes through the drinks, appetizers, entrees, sides, and desserts with swipes to the left and right as she browses through. She almost doesn’t wants to touch the screen as it is very sticky. She presses the button on the napkin dispenser on her table to wipe off her hands.

Using the same napkin she press the “order drink and appetizers” option on the menu. Then again using the same napkin presses the the box next to the ice tea as her drink and the spring rolls and crab rangoons as her appetizers. The timer screen which is located across the room, shows her name and the time she has to wait for her appetizers and drink. It says 10 minutes.

As she waits she looks on her phone on her Instagram. Then she goes to another tab on her phone screen that goes to the Yelp reviews of this restaurant. And then a server comes with her food. She quickly puts her phone down and tells the server “thank you.” As he walks away she zoom in on the food with the camera hidden in her pendant that she is wearing. She takes a sip of the ice tea and is pleasantly surprised. She then slowly take a bite of the spring roll and is once again pleasantly surprised. She then tastes the crab rangoons and is in heaven.

After she devoured her appetizers, she proceeds to order her entree of chicken stir-fry with low-mein. She also orders a refill of her ice tea. She practically wimpers at the fact that she has to wait 15 minutes.

At the end of her meal, before she exits the restaurant, she pays for her meal and leave the server a tip on the screen that is by the exit door with a hostess standing beside it. Once back at her apartment she goes to her food blog site using her tablet and rave about the food and uploads her video and pictures.

A week later, she notices that the restaurant responded to her blog post by a fly away message on her watch thanking her and inviting her to come back with a meal on the house. She takes them up on their offer and order a car on her phone to the place. As a gift, the restaurant gives her QR code especially made for her embedded in a chip which she adds to her smart watch’s SD card. This code allows her a free meal everytime she comes, all she needs to do is allow the pay kiosk to scan her code on her wrist.
