Interview 1:
- Kendra
- In class pair up
- Kendra believes that independent artists do not have a fair advantage on streaming platforms because unlike major label artists, the independent artists do not get recommended as much or put on as many playlists.
- Kendra’s responses pretty much sums up all the things I have observed on researching the problem of independent artist having the direct access to connect with fans but the struggle of getting noticed.
- What I learned through this particular interview is that a lot of people like Kendra, find new music to listen to through social media and algorithms of different streaming and content sites. Which of course, confirms the problem of independent artist having the direct access to connect with fans but the struggle of getting noticed.
Interview 2:
- Jacob
- In class pair up
- Jacob is a music consumer who doesn’t care much for “who performed the song” but, “the sound of the song”. He is open minded to listen to indie artists and has supported indie artists, but notice that if he doesn’t search for them himself, he really isn’t exposed to them as much. Even if he listens to a particular indie artist, the recommendations will be a mix of both indie and major artists (more so major) with a similar sound or vibe. But if he does see content from a major artist, he will not get recommended an indie artist with a similar sound or vibe, just the major artists.
- Jacob response came from point of view of the “wandering customer” segment. This is the customer that have no specific need or desire but what attracts their interests attracts their interest. With these kind of consumers you really want to make sure that everyone gets a fair shot at allowing this consumer to engage in their content because these type of consumers can become more established fans when they become really intrigued. Which will help the independent artist grow their fan base a lot more.
- Something I learned from this interview is that even the most casual consumer is being force fed to listen to major label artist over independent artists. And even if they do intentionally seek and engage with the independent artists content, the algorithm will continue to try and prompt them to the major label artists.
