For this drawing my classmates and I had to draw what was under my kitchen sink. We were given the option of rearrange it to our pleasure, so we can have a better composition. However, I thought it was fine the way it was and decided to draw it straight on by lying on the floor. Had some back pain when I was done, but I was pleased with the results.

This is a negative shape drawing. Meaning instead of focusing on the objects we drew the shapes surrounding them. We weren’t allowed to lift our pencil/ sketch out the image. Shading or smudging of any kind was also taboo with this assignment. I got around not having dimension through shading by adding negative shapes that were distorted to fit the shape of the item. I don’t remember how much we were allowed to erase, but I wanted to do as little erasing as possible, and focused more on the scale of the objects than whether or not they were moving away from the foreground correctly, which is probably why a lot of the left side looks weird. Well, I’m rambling, I hope you like my image.

For this drawing we used an additive process. This means we had to gradually add more material to the image we were constructing, and weren’t allowed to remove it with an eraser. There was a “cheat” for that, but that’s not my style. Anywho, this was accomplished by using a pencil holding technique I forgot the name of and would be a hassle to describe in writing. The reason I chose this image of what you would never guess is my disco ball, is because it makes a humming sound with a lot of pretty lights. Its almost like being in the vacuum of space; and excluding the obvious suffering; Its empty and peaceful.

This is another negative space drawing. What that means is that instead of focusing on the objects themselves you would have to focus on drawing the empty space around them. Now I know that is hard to believe since my process doesn’t show in this image, but believe me its true. Using negative space allows you to have a more accurate scale of whatever you are looking at by looking at the amount of space that separates it. Does that make sense? Good.

The rules in creating this image was to lift your pencil as minimally as possible, no sketching, and create dimension without shading in any way, shape, or form. I created dimension the same way I did in my “Under the Kitchen Sink” drawing(check it out if you haven’t seen it already). I distorted the shapes in the shapes to create an illusion of depth. An easy example of this is the plant vase at the right of my image. The one thing I would do differently is have a greater variety of opacity in the lines. If I did that the image’s foreground and background would stand apart from each other some more, so maybe next time.

I’m embarrassed of the amount of attempts it took me to create this, so embarrassed I refuse to post my practice sketches. Well, that’s enough about me, lets get into what this drawing entails. This is a Contour Drawing, and that means I’m not allowed to lift my pencil at all. I think when it comes to drawings like this its best to slow down, be patient, and analyze. If I had done that maybe the top of the skull wouldn’t be so boxy.

Charcoal, Sponge, Brick Eraser. Big Sheet of Paper, Big leaf as reference, Napkin

For this drawing I first layered the entire sheet with charcoal and smudged it with the sponge. I proceeded on by outlining the shape of the leaf with more charcoal. I added some details and more material. Then crumbled up my napkin and placed it inside the outline of my image to give it the “wrinkly leaf” texture. I then used my brick eraser and created what would be the stem of the leaf with it. If I were to change anything I would get rid of that ridiculous cast shadow on my image. It is no where near accurate as to what I was seeing, and I cant tell you what was going through my head at the time. However, I’m somewhat glad I made this mistake, because I definitely wont be doing that again.
