Some scientists have scrutinized the theory that dimethyl sulfate could have formed, even going as far to say its impossible. Livermore lab never preformed any further tests on this theory, only the initial creation of dimethyl sulfone was tested (Stone.) The natural amount of sulfate in a body is very small (Dennis), So even if dimethyl sulfate did form, it’s questionable whether or not it would have been enough to cause that many people to get that sick. Plus the EMT’s who brought her to the hospital were unaffected. It is also believed to be a stretch that the hospital is responsible for covering something up, they had no particular ties to the police and just a couple years later they were shut down due to the hazardous circumstances, why would the police have helped them and then bust them afterwards. It may prompt staff at the hospital to tell someone about what really happened and that seems like to big of a risk to take.
Even though the Livermore lab never ran any further tests that doesn’t mean their theory isn’t true. Its very possible on paper even if no one has tested it yet. As for the small amount of sulfate in the body, there’s still enough to create the dimethyl sulfate and when combined with the hazardous environment of the hospital, which has been proven on more than one occasion, there is a great possibility it could be the cause of the medical staff’s symptoms. As well as the fact the compound would only be able to form if the dimethyl sulfone was broken down, and the defibrillation didn’t happen until Gloria arrived at the hospital.
The fact that the EMTs didn’t get sick only plays to the idea that the hospitals environment was partially responsible for the staff’s illness, because that would mean that the fumes didn’t become harmful or able to spread until Gloria was inside the emergency room. As for the police, there are lots of reasons that they would have busted the hospital. Covering something up doesn’t necessarily mean they were doing for the hospital. They may have not wanted what really happened to Gloria to get out, plus the medical staff was unlikely to say anything as they probably didn’t want to be blamed for what was going on in the hospital, it would be smarter to just keep quite and move on.
