Working with plaster was our 3rd project. I came into this blind, not knowing what to expect. I never worked with anything remotely similar to plaster before. So we started making our plaster with stuff our teacher provides us. Basically we all mixed flour with warm water and then pouring it into a mold like a cube. After it was dried we worked outside every day until it was due. It could get really dirty so I was careful about my clothes and always wear gloves. I grabbed a few tools like a couple of chisels and a mallet. First thing I wanted to do was just make some variety of dent shapes into the plaster. I did that on every side and corners. Eventually professor Alembik approached me and suggests I should go in deeper with my carving. Because our goal is to shift it away from looking likes a cube too much. So then I went less reserved and knock a lot more plaster off. Working around the shapes I’ve already created, I made trails, lumps, swirls, etc. In the mist of my progress I was complemented on the texture that I made with a V shaped chisel. Thus I decided to add that bumpy texture to my entire piece. That was my way of really making mine stand out more. There were a few plaster work from my classmates that I really admire. Some that were very risky, that could’ve easily break if not gentle. Such as holes and intricate carving like the octopus from Juan in our class. I unfortunately didn’t come close to something like that but I did attempt to do something outside my comfort, i.e. the short tunnel going in and out of my piece. I described my final piece as a “mountain maze.” I  learned and gained a lot of experience doing this project.
