I was assigned to create two collage posters about a group I believe society should have compassion for. The specific group that I chose was DREAMERS. In my collage project, I wanted to show the journey that DREAMERS go through to arrive in the United States. As well as expressing that DREAMERS shouldn’t have to feel like they don’t belong. In my collage posters, the butterfly represented the DREAMERS. Through the interview part of this compassion project, I got to interview my friend, who arrived in the United States when he was three years old and is a DREAMER. I got to hear how he feels living in the United States as an undocumented individual. In some parts, I struggled with finding the right image to represent the story that I wanted to tell. One was where I wanted the butterfly to arrive after their challenging journey. I wasn’t sure if I wanted the butterfly to end on a flower or meet up with other butterflies. When showing my peers during the class, I got a good response from the class. They could understand the story that I was trying to tell. One thing they suggested was adding other animals to the poster. I planned to add some but hadn’t found the right images. I am glad they thought adding the butterfly’s predators would improve the piece, too. This project allowed me to learn more about Photoshop and improve my skills with an Xacto knife. It also helped me improve the way I plan my project.
