Materials: Ink… Crowquill Pen… Bristol Paper… Rounded Brush…

A surprisingly fun assignment, using ink to practice different techniques. In this assignment we were asked to draw bell peppers or sea shells, in this I had the sea shells.

We had four different pieces, the first one being contour with the ink and crowquill pen. We created outlines of our objects, ones that would allow our viewer to see and understand what the object is representing.

The second is using one of three, or all techniques. Choosing among hatching, cross-hatching, and stipple. Hatching is a technique of creating fine lines that are close together to create a form of shading. Cross hatching is just like hatching, however, this layers multiple lines across each other. Then stippling is creating value with dots.

Third, creating a piece with wash. Rather than using the crowquill pen, we use a rounded brush and essentially paint our object. This allowed us to play with the values of our ink, adding more or less water depending on how light or dark we needed it to be.

My favorite out of the four pieces. A combination of all of the techniques above into one. I used contour to create a nice outline of the shell, then using stipple to create the small dots and lines within the shell that I felt the crowquill pen would be too harsh for. Then using both hatching and cross hatching to assist in making value alongside the wash.
