Value & Mixed Media

conte crayon, Ink, charcoal pencil, and compressed charcoal

In project four, we explore different mediums to create a final drawing. The first medium that was used was black ink. We use the black in with a brush and calligraphy pen. We used a bell pepper in class to explore the different ink values by diluting it with water. Another media we learned about was Conte crayons. These crayons are used to add temperature to the paper. We paired these crayons with compressed charcoal and charcoal pencil. We used these tools on grey colored paper. We also briefly went over figure studies for a self-portrait.
Creating the greyscale in my sketchbook was very helpful in knowing how far I could push the Higgins ink. Also, practicing drawing lines with the fountain pen helped me see what I can and cannot do with the nib. There weren’t many errors with the assignment for me. There was a hiccup with my self-portrait, and I had to start over.
I tried to learn how to use a calligraphy pen in middle school and didn’t have much success. Knowing the technique had me excited the most because this has something I have been interested in for a while. I enjoyed using the ink with the calligraphy pen and learned a lot. Despite the shortcomings of my first self-portrait, I’m glad I was able to complete the second one in time and still be proud of the outcome. Seeing the techniques that my other classmates were using was inspiring, and you could see their art style show through while using these tools.
I hope to use the calligraphy pen and even the Conte crayon. I understood that adding temperate to a drawing does make a huge difference. I like my freestyle bell pepper drawing. I explored the technique of going over charcoal with a wet brush. The effect was also like a wash. My goal was to have fun with this project, and this is by far my favorite assignment because of the new tools and techniques we learned during this unit.
