Additive Drawing

Charcoal pencil

The additive drawing assignment considered a series of lines placed on paper. These lines are so close together that you cannot tell that this drawing is only done with lines. This technique is used with a charcoal pencil. This assignment is supposed to be done with little to no eraser.
The goal of the project was to think of something quiet. I grabbed an empty bottle and trash can and sat in a calm place, and began to place a series of lines on the paper. Before starting the assignment, I began to sharpen my pencil and made sure to have as much lead exposed as possible. I did the assignment twice because the first lines weren’t coming together. I made sure to keep an extra sheet of paper to scribble on to make the lead flat. After making the lead as flat as possible, I achieved the proper shading.
I learned many techniques along the way to make this project possible. Designs from the negative space assignments were helpful. This assignment made me realize to be patient. It also taught me to work through repetition because drawings the lines was getting boring, and I wanted to stop, but I pushed through and kept going. I am proud of the results of the additive drawing. I hope to one day use these techniques in my future art.
