Netiquette and Flame-bait

FlaSo, this evening I took a quiz on netiquette. Overall I did well but I did learn that I may fall for “flame-bait.” This is apparently people just trying to get you to react strongly to whatever they post. My dad did the real life version of this my whole childhood and I fell for it most of the time so I’m not surprised that I fell for it in the netiquette quiz (found here http://netiquette.s3-website-us-east-1.amazonaws.com/ ).

The take away is that I will try not to respond to things that make me upset thus disappointing the flame-baiter.

  • I could not find any information on when exactly they update information
  • Claims of “latest research” – there were recent study dates but didn’t seem like they were regularly updated
  • Every link I clicked worked
  • The site was started in 1997 and “formalized” in 2007
Relevance          
  • This site is mostly organized by issues, ex: “gun control,” “unions,” “abortion,” etc.
  • They provide a LOT of information and explanation for each topic, excessively so. Each topic feels like a legal document on why you should support their stance on a topic.
  • If you want to find current positions from each potential candidate in 2016 you will be disappointed-if it is there I couldn’t easily find it
  • They also have an App and Initiatives sections that are admittedly more biased and less efficiently checked for truth
Authority            
  • It does list the people in charge
  • The president of the site has a degree in Mechanical Engineering-this personally bothered me because having that degree does not seem relevant to running a site providing political fact information
  • The site intentionally does not disclose who funds it, “private donors,” whose privacy they ensure-questionable
  • The site very prominently displays big name organizations that have cited their information, on every page I visited-I’m not sure what their goal is by doing this. Perhaps to appear more legitimate; compensating for something?
  • They do provide contact information
  • It is a .com site
Accuracy             
  • The state that they are conservative/libertarian and claim to be unbiased in their reporting of facts
  • The language was occasionally emotional but not overly so.
  • Professional appearance
  • Proper grammar
  • Citations of information
  • They lay out “Standards of Credibility” for some of their information and admittedly not others
  • Most of this information is out of my field (I’m not a subject-matter expert)
Purpose              
  • “A resource for independent thinkers”
  • Conservative/libertarians that are reporting unbiased facts -I don’t believe this because their information (“facts”) supports their views
  • They don’t appear to be selling advertising
  • They don’t disclose how, specifically, they are funded so it is hard to tell if they may be supporting particular groups

Conclusion:

The overall feeling I got from the language of their articles was that they were trying hard to sell me on a particular conclusion. I think if you already agree with their views you will find them more credible. I think they are somewhat credible if you take their obvious ideological slant into consideration. You can get a good overview of conservative/libertarian views on particular issues.

Conclusion:        

I got a much better vibe from this site. It is extremely organized and very specific to the exact statements that are made and questions asked/answered. I like that they disclose their funding but honestly I wouldn’t necessarily be able to analyze it for issues. It seemed much more interactive. I feel that if I asked a relevant question I would get an answer and links to relevant sources to back it up. I will probably use this if I have political questions in the future.

Below is my chart of search results for “yoga and physical therapy.” It seems that all of my results were for businesses dealing with physical therapy and yoga or journals/articles about yoga and physical therapy. I am more interested in the journals and articles. Five of the search engines had “embodyphysicaltherapy.com,” Yahoo is the only one that didn’t. Dogpile and WebCrawler, the metas, returned the same results and were the same results as Bing (but in a different order). Interestingly, Yahoo returned two pages from the same base page. There were nine unique results in total. Two of these actually came from ixquick, a meta search engine. So it must be searching a wider variety of sources or have a slightly different criteria than most.

Advice for being a Successful Online Student!!

TSuccess Online?he most important thing you can do is to commit to doing your work! Don’t distract yourself with other ‘stuff.’ You will waste a lot of time. So save your ‘facebooking’ as a reward for finishing a chunk of your school work.

 

 

 

 

Procrastination!

Avoid procrastinating at all costs! Early in the week look at what needs to be done that week and look ahead to the next week as well. Break the work up into manageable chunks and plan time to get them done. This can be mental planning but I benefit more from physically writing things down. Or you can set up reminders on your phone so you don’t forget!

 

I cannot stressBalance enough how important balance is in life. Make sure you make time for school work but don’t totally neglect other aspects of your life. Enough sleep, exercise, family time(for those of you with kids especially), and healthy meals are all important factors for success. One of my favorite ways to prepare for a test  is to do some yoga and then practice my side kicks in Hapkido class (a Korean martial art). It really gets out the stress of an upcoming test and fuels my brain. Just don’t forget to have a snack afterwards!

Online presentation of history term paper:

  1. Skype (or any video conferencing) would allow a real time presentation with potential for feedback and distance/location would not be an issue.
  2. A YouTube video on the presentation would be accessible to just about anyone anywhere and at a time that was convenient for them.

Online economics final study guide:

  1. A group blog would allow many users (the economics class) to posts of relevant notes and links for study and allow them to be easily organized into categories.
  2. A Facebook group would allow for everyone to post links to resources as well as easily communicate with the group in organizing them.

Interactive tour of Berlin:

  1. Prezi aids in the presentation on many types of media, including links and videos, that would be helpful in an interactive tour.
  2. A Facebook page, set up for a real or imagined person, could take you on a ‘tour’ of her life, complete with videos and pictures and general Facebook rants. It would also allow for questions and comments to be answered and events to be created.

Collaborative research project on Facebook’s affect on social habits of young adults:

  1. A wiki would be ideal for a fast collaboration project as the group could all add to it and update at the same time.
  2. A folksonomy could be used to organize relevant research collaboratively through tags.

I sit this morning in a comfortable chair, eating warm oatmeal with bananas, starring out the window at a decidedly unpleasant day (at least to someone who knows they will be out in the rain and muck and forty degree temperatures shortly trying to load mountains of scrap metal to later haul away and recycle).

So I sit. Focused on the task at hand: this very blog post, my first. I wonder how to make a technology themed school blog happen for I generally feel a great lack in that department.

Technology is uncomfortable for me. No, not the software or hardware or Internet. But the physical bent over, scrunched up awkward position I am forced to take while typing on this IPad.

As an Exercise Science major and Physical Therapy student hopeful, this is particularly troubling. It is not healthy or ergonomic and tends toward promoting a sedentary life style. I often find myself sitting for too long staring at screens in a really uncomfortable position but being so engrossed in what I am doing prevents me from realizing it.

I think it is a problem. One that I hope to be able to help in the future.
