Self-Portraits

Self Portraits/2022

For this assignment we had to use a mirror and capture our likeness using the skills we have gathered throughout the semester. Unfortunately I missed half of the class where the conte medium (compressed powdered graphite or charcoal mixed with a clay base) was introduced so I had a hard time understanding it. After practicing with the material I got started on the self-portraits. To complete the portraits, I used the process of negative space to figure out the dimensions of everything. Negative space is when the artist uses the empty space around and between the subject(s) of the art. Once I understood how the medium worked, I really enjoyed this project.

Inked Peppers

The original pepper

Wilted Peppers/2022

For this project we were sent out to find a deformed pepper to practice different ink drawing techniques. We had to practice contour, stipple, hatching, cross-hatching, and wash. I have worked with ink before, so I was very familiar with all of the techniques. Ink is one of my favorite mediums to work with. In class I started off by making a contour of the pepper to understand the whole shape. I then worked on the stipple piece and the hatching/cross-hatching with stipple so I could understand the value that the pepper had. At home I worked on the wash piece and the combined piece. To get different values I had to water down the ink I was using.
