Reductive Leaf

Reductive drawing of a large leaf

Big leaf/ 2022

With this piece we practiced the process of reductive drawing to draw a still life of a collard green leaf. Reductive drawing is the process of drawing where material like graphite, charcoal or pastel is used to cover a surface of a canvas and then the drawing is made by the removal of the media by erasing or smudging the piece. We had a few of the studio lights on and the shades on the window opened slightly. This helped to make the lighting have a lot of contrast which helped to define the shapes of the leaf. Using charcoal I laid out a dark layer and used a sponge and eraser to lighten the areas I wanted to. This project was more about using the different values to make shapes instead of drawing them in.
