Original Insect Sculpture
Create an Original Insect Sculpture (OIS). The sculpture must be 3D, self-supporting, and measure at least 12” x 8” x 6” (excluding extra-long appendages). Include at least one movable part (e.g., jaw, wings, or tail). Design must incorporate features from multiple insects or beings, but no single insect should be a direct combination. Use different gauges of wire as the primary material. Up to 10% of additional materials may be incorporated. No power tools (e.g., drills, soldering irons) allowed. Avoid clumping materials to create mass. Ensure structural integrity by considering gravity, balance, and display.

INTRODUCING: HOTTEN

Common Name Genus Species
Hotten Danaus gekko
The Hotten is found in the zone seven, southern region of the USA. It lives in vegetable gardens and flowering beds. It’s main source of foods are carpenter bees and aphids that feast on the blooms. The colorful tail will attract the bees and they come to the sting of the tail. They use their proboscis collect aphids.
They live in pairs and mate for life. Their breeding season starts in the early spring when the Daffodils bloom. This is a male member of the Species who shares the responsibility of care for nest. His adornment attracts what is needed to maintain and attract the mates.

PROJECT REVIEW: Creepy Crawley
It is my understanding that I am to create an Original Insect Sculpture (OIS). The Sculpture must be 3D, self-supporting and measure at least 12”x8’ X6” (excluding extra-long appendages). The design elements are to include at least one movable part (jaw, wings, or tail and incorporate features from multiple insects or beings. No single insect must be a combination. Different gauge of wire is use to build the OIS, up to 10% of additional materials can be used. No power tools like drills or soldering irons can be used. Avoid clumping to materials to create mass. Presentation and Structure should consider gravity, balance and display.
MY PROCESS:
I started the project by reading and understanding the Rediscovering the Forgotten benefits of Drawing. As a group research insects including beetles and create details drawing of at least three bugs paying attention to their body parts and function.
I decided on an Original Insect Sculpture combining a butter fly, scorpion and lizard. I used newspaper print paper to make a blueprint. I placed the 12” x 8”x6” on the newsprint for accuracy in size. Using .23 wire to for the outside form of my OIS. The body was set up like a chafing dish, I was able to adjust the body size to include volume, mass and the scorpion tail for balance.
WHAT WILL I TAKE AWAY FROM THIS PROJECT:
What is my take away from this project? I regained my respect for drawing to discover details and how it can assist me as an Artists. How combining different insects to create an OIS. How to design and use a blueprint to make wire sculptures. I researched how to make beaded ear ring and added them to the tail for movement. I learned how to used jewelry making tools. I will be taking all newly minted skills with me and using them when as needed.
