Composing Space with Tension

Compression to form abstract Art

Positive Space Switcheroo

Directing the Viewer’s Eye

This assignment as should stimulate the space between shapes, producing tension between them.  This energy will draw attention to the negative and positive spaces. Create three different works, 1. Compression,  2. Positive Space switcheroo,  3. Directing the viewer’s Eye thru the piece

I selected a scene with outdoor organic and inorganic shapes. Seven different shapes to be used. I researched Compression and found a few videos on photography that headed me in the right direction. I used cut- paper make the shapes, manipulated the shapes, traced the shapes and painted them in with ink. While manipulating the shapes I looked for every opportunity focus on the negative spaces. Making sure that the ground sheet was activated on all sides and that the viewers movement through the work was complete. The same process was used in making 3. Directing the Viewer’s Eye also, adding color in the secondary shades of orange, violet and green.

My dreams were always centered around attending art school and creating inspirational art. I married, raised a family then retired as a retail store manager. My passion for art never wavered and followed me throughout my life by the way of color, creative crafts, and watercolor painting of mostly flowers. In the past, I indulge my creative side with watercolor classes in centers such as the Spruill, Callanwolde, and Hudgens. Now a dream fulfilled, I am now an art student at GSU looking for my voice to inspire others.
