Artist Statement
The reason I have focused my work about Depression is to show the many sides to it, usually hidden from society. My plan was to capture emotions that relate to the idea of depression.
I have seen, heard, and even experienced depression. Depression is an illness that negatively affects how you feel, act, and think. My work captures the feelings that one may experience. Loneliness, sadness fear, lack of interest, feeling worthless, and thoughts of suicide are all symptoms that I chose to photograph.
I choose this topic to photograph because people close to me, family, and friends have experienced depression. Mental Illness hasn’t always got the attention it really seeks. I expect my work to get people thinking about mental health and how someone they know might be struggling without them knowing. I have gotten inspiration from a famous artist known as Picasso and how he incorporated his sadness and struggle into some of his artworks. I feel like this is just the beginning of my project; due to the abundant of thoughts, symptoms, and feelings different people experience.
