Lange Summary

In this article, Lange expresses how the architectural structure and conventional views of universities are changing to reflect the various ever-growing thoughts and ideas of a plethora of students. Universities are now building “deluxe structures for the generation of wonderful ideas” (Lange, 1) which expresses how the structure and design of a campus greatly influences mood, thoughts, feelings, and creativity in a positive and encouraging way. Lange specifically details these spaces to include designs and attributes such as “exposure to natural light.. prototypes, round tables, and staircases” (Lange, 2). This conveys the versatility of a modernized college campus, in which students are encouraged to move around freely, talk, and work together in groups as opposed to going “to a lecture hall with seats for 100” or working in “closed-off” classrooms (Lange, 2). Personal Site Response of FOX Theatre

Entirety of Fox Theatre

Postcard of Fox theatre

As I stood directly in front of the FOX theatre, I noticed that the building is almost castle-like, with a prominent comportment that exudes attention. I personified the structure to be confident and bold based upon its stature and viewed it as reminiscent of medieval and classical times, with some modern day style. I thought a lot about the time and architecture of the period when the theatre was created in 1929. I wonder how it could have survived the Great Depression and am fascinated thinking about all of the events that may have happened in each day, month, year, and decade from the past to the present.  I can imagine Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, or Shirley Temple performing at this theatre back then. There is a sense of freedom in the era of entertainment, flappers, and cinema creation that I vicariously experienced.

Inside of the Fox Theatre

The inside of the theatre evokes a warm and inviting mood with long halls and spacious rooms. The dim luminescence promotes a peaceful vibe. The architecture and design of the building is beautiful and I appreciated the serenity of it all on a Tuesday afternoon when I could be alone.

This vast building is a performing arts arena, utilized for various stage events including plays and concerts. The infrastructure incorporates a parking lot directly to the right of it, offering a convenient experience for visiting patrons. In front of the theatre there is a three- lane road with cars actively whizzing by or stopping at the light further ahead. In addition to the literal traffic surrounding the building, there are various restaurants, and shops, as well as a plethora of people bustling around the area sightseeing, jogging, biking, and doing other miscellaneous activities. Infamous FOX sign

Directly above the large theatre entrance, a depiction of two bright, colorful holographic signs promote various upcoming events that change every few seconds.  The FOX sign is large and bold, with an elongated slim shape and a cherry red background. The actual words are white and possess small lights that allow for an illuminated glow of the structure at night. The entire building is made with alternating light-beige to medium tan and darker brown bricks that exhibit a coarse, rough texture. There are eight square windows that stretch the length and width of the front side of the building and display pictures and information related to the theatre and entertainment provided.  The front of the building also produces one large entrance essentially divided by a ticket booth. The booth is an octagonal block with shiny gold pillars, framed to take on the shape of both a dome and crown. There are velvety red curtains behind clear glossy windows that are closed to signify that tickets can be bought inside; depending on the traffic regarding business for the day. The lower half of the booth is smooth marble, and colored a rusty reddish-brown that changes to charcoal gray at the very bottom. Regarding the division, there is a left and right section leading to the same space, which is purposefully positioned to allow guests more room to walk into the area if they must purchase tickets at the booth.

Ceiling detail

Upon entering, there is a soft rectangular brown, black, and white mat with a portrayal of the FOX theatre sign welcoming people in. The floor is marble-like with various geometric shapes and designs, warmly pigmented with different shades of light olive, pink, taupe, orange, and blue. The structure is similar to a cathedral, with high detailed ceilings embellished with hanging chandeliers, gold frames, and intricately detailed designs of a corinthian-like style.
