It would be nice to get the diversity (via race and gender) breakdown numbers for the following – IIT, GSU Staff, GSU Faculty, GSU Faculty/Staff Combined

Great question. To make progress, it’s important to first understand your starting point. We’ve gathered current demographics of employees in IIT, at Georgia State and in the larger higher education IT landscape. What are your thoughts on what these graphics say about diversity and equity at our institution and at others and in the IT industry?

First, some definitions in light of the complexity of grouping individuals into defined categories.
Gender – The categorizations reflected in the data below reflect gender being defined as “male” and “female.” According to more current definitions, this might be better thought of as sex. The difference being that sex is defined as your assigned gender at birth, while a more current definition of gender takes into account where you feel that you personally fall on the spectrum between male and female. Commonly people identify as male or female, but some fall in the middle or move throughout the spectrum and additional terms within this spectrum can be explored here.
Race – We also want to note that race is a social construct and not exclusively genetic identity. There is often inherent difficultly in categorizing people into one category regarding race. However, the below does reflect race as identified by the person taking the survey the data reports on.
