Altered Book

The goal of this project was to alter a book to create a piece of art that somewhat reflected the original meaning of it. When looking for a book to alter, I came across a book of classic fairy tales and was immediately drawn to the beautiful illustrations it contained. More than this, I was interested in altering the idea of what could be considered a “classic” fairy tale. I was inspired by the tropes of these storied – a young royal and a peasant, singing in a garden, castles, etc. However, I wanted to put these tropes into effect with LGBT protagonists. With this inspiration, I got to work cutting every page of the book down to the covers out, and carving a border to paint gold and make look like the book that opens to begin a princess story. I then sorted through these pages searching for images of the girls from these stories that I could collage onto my heroines. Finally I finished cutting the grass, painting the book, and constructing the composition for this project.
