Compassion Poster

This project centered around garnering compassion for a social group. At first I chose to do a social group I was not a part of, but after having trouble finding inspiration I began to feel stuck. During this time on a vacation to Alabama, I received a pamphlet that promoted Christianity which called homosexuality sinful, and refused to refer to it as anything other than “sodomy.” As a member of the LGBT community, I immediately saw an opportunity to use this messaging in the opposite way it was intended, and garner compassion for the LGBT community through a biblical lens. The cover of this pamphlet, which reads “Hey!! Is it REALLY “OK” to be Gay? What does the word of God say?” is featured heavily in both posters. This wording inspired me to present a different view, that there when interpreted by a more compassionate audience, the bible does not necessarily denounce being gay. For these posters, I chose to promote two different pro-LGBT websites, one committed to presenting a gay friendly interpretation of the bible, and one committed to getting LGBT youth at risk of violence or ostracization the resources they need to better their situation.
