TIPPS Key Personnel
Project Director Dr. Lindsey Cohen, oversees the entire TIPPS project. He works closely with the key personnel, partners, and trainees via regular meetings; provides on-site supervision; and has regular correspondence and meetings with GSU, CHOA, Emory, Grady, and VA partners to monitor progress and adjust training as necessary. Dr. Cohen was the project director for the highly successful 2010-2014, 2014-2016, and 2016-current GPE projects. These prior 9 years have allowed Dr. Cohen to refine training and monitoring of the project, and to bring in key collaborators for the current proposal. Dr. Cohen is a licensed psychologist, Distinguished University Professor, Dean’s Faculty Associate for Faculty Development (charged with creating a peer faculty mentoring program for the college), past Director of Graduate Studies, past Associate Director of Clinical Psychology, past Director of the Clinical Psychology program, past Director of the Psychology Clinic, and mentor for three student NIH NRSA F31 grants, multiple student fellowships, two NIH PRIDE mentees, and several junior colleagues. In addition, Dr. Cohen was the past co-Chair of the GSU Graduate Assessment Committee, which is charged with evaluation of the over 100 graduate training programs at the university. Each of these roles helped build the necessary skills and expertise to oversee this training project. Dr. Cohen’s role as primary investigator on large applied pediatric psychology research projects – most conducted at CHOA and Emory – has also allowed him to hone necessary abilities for the current interdisciplinary proposal. In addition, Dr. Cohen has a long history of providing supervision to psychology graduate students working in pediatric healthcare settings, with a number of these former students currently working with underserved pediatric populations. Lastly, Dr. Cohen’s prior and ongoing professional relationships with key personnel and partners helps facilitate TIPPS collaboration.
Experiential Site Coordinator Dr. Erin Tully, is an Associate Professor, co-Director of Graduate Studies, and Practicum Coordinator for the GSU Psychology program. In her roles, Dr. Tully is committed to clinical student training, especially around experiential training. She oversees the students’ experiential training, maintains contact with all experiential training site supervisors and administrators.. and meets regularly with Dr. Cohen about the project.
Project Evaluation Coordinator Dr. Kevin Swartout, is an Associate Professor and co-Director of Graduate Studies. Dr. Swartout has expertise in mixed methods assessment of training programs, and he oversees the regular assessment of training process and outcome goals as well as regular HRSA-determined indices of TIPPS project progress. Dr. Swartout meets regularly with Dr. Cohen around performance evaluation and how to modify training based on process and outcome indices.
TIPPS Consultant Dr. Nadine J. Kaslow, PhD, ABPP is a Professor, Vice Chair for Faculty Development, and Chief Psychologist at Emory University School of Medicine; and she is the Past-President of the American Psychological Association. Dr. Kaslow has served as the Chair of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC). Lastly, Dr. Kaslow has a long history of grant-funded research in psychological treatment of disadvantaged pediatric populations. She has conducted research on culturally sensitive psychosocial services. Dr. Kaslow is extremely well-qualified to serve as a consultant on all aspects of this project, and she will prove especially helpful in determining critical education and training content and design to optimize preparing trainees for careers in providing services to disadvantaged youth populations. Dr. Kaslow has served as a key consultant on the prior 3 successful HRSA GPE projects directed by Dr. Cohen.
TIPPS Consultant Justine Welsh, MD, is an Assistant Professor, Director of Emory Healthcare Addiction Services, and Director of Emory Adolescent Substance Use Treatment Services. Her clinical and research experience and expertise focus on the prevention and treatment of pediatric OUD and SUD. In addition, she has provided a number of talks and workshops on this topic, and she serves as co-chair or member of numerous local and national advisory boards focused on OUD and SUDs. Dr. Welsh is committed to assisting Dr. Cohen in incorporating the key training components for GPE fellows to be optimally positioned to provide OUD and SUD services.
