It Could Have Been You

Seeing this small memorial in the law school in Cordoba struck a certain chord in me. It shows multiple pictures of people that were disappeared during Argentina’s dictatorship, and in the center is a mirror that’s just the right size for a similar photo of yourself (or myself). To me, it immediately conveyed the message that ANYONE could have been disappeared or tortured or killed. Seeing my face alongside their faces puts me more directly in their perspective, and I think it’s so important for more people to feel that when remembering this horrible time. If we are sure to realize that no one was truly safe during the dictatorship, then we are hopefully sure to work harder to not be complicit when things like this occur again, and to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.
