I am excited to be part of the Children’s Literature Association Conference Book Deserts Project as children’s education has been a large part of my life for many years. Good reading fundamentals can be an incredibly influential factor in a child’s academic success. I feel it is important for all children to have access to the tools to build this solid educational base. Unfortunately, there are still some areas where the students do not have ample access to literature. It is my hope that little by little, our efforts can help alleviate this.
It is my goal to personally and through social media, have 50 books donated to Jolly Elementary School in Clarkston, Ga. My first donation consists were Hop on Pop and Fox in Socks by Dr. Seuss as well as Matilda by Roald Dahl. I chose the first two because I feel they are good tools for both new readers and new English speakers since it uses a lot of words and a rhyming mechanic. The last one is a fun story that encourages children to think outside the box and believe in their own fantastic uniqueness. I would encourage anyone who reads this to donate any appropriate children’s literature to an in-need school.
Some titles I would recommend for donation would be Where the Wild Things Are, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, The Story of Ferdinand, Frog and Toad Are Friends, Bear Snores On, Magic Tree House, George and Martha, Peter Pan, How To Train Your Dragon, The Phantom Tollbooth, Maniac Magee, The Chronicles of Narnia, or any of favorite books from your childhood.
