About a month ago we looked at about 5 out of the 9 active project groups in Dr. C’s Perspective on Disabilities Spring 2024 class. This week we will be looking at the rest of the groups minus 1 group. We will get to see new groups and hear updates on some of the previous groups.

Groups we haven’t heard about yet…

First we have the Clarkston Outreach Group

According to a member of the group on March 1st of 2024 the group was developing a plan to create and host a sporting event for the disabled children in Clarkston as well as researching out to places that would be able to host this event. All while simultaneously collecting research on both the children and adults of this community. As of April 11, 2024, with all the research they have gathered over the month they have gotten to the point where they have planned the logistics for future fairs focused on disability and accommodating all people. They also found a potential venue and planned events for their cause to be held there. When asked if they had any closing statement this group member said, ” We are happy that we were able to take this project in a new direction, but we hope that next years group can take this to another level and host it with the limited time. ”

As we can see they made amazing progress over the semester.

The second group is the Veteran Research Group

According to a member of the group on March 3rd of 2024 the group had gotten all the equipment they would need for their project i.e. for filming, making consent forms, working towards gaining approval from the VA (I believe this stands for Veterans Alliance) to allow them to do Interviews. They also \were in the process of writing their survey and interview questions while trying to locate pamphlets for disabled veterans to know where and how to get their benefits and set them up with help groups. According to this group member as of April 11th 2024 during these final weeks they have finished all interviews questions and surveys, and have started finishing the interview process itself and will be presenting their findings as a short 5-7 minute film for the class- while turning in the full video to our professor, Dr C. Lastly they will be finishing up putting together their pictures and videos to create a pamphlet this weekend.

The last group is the Independent Research Group

This group is a one man show researching congenital heart disease, led by Alsean Griggs. According to him, the main reason he did his project on this topic was because he was personally affected by this disability, due to the fact he himself has this condition. His goal with his project was to show how it is like for a kid who was born with this disability to live. So, he mapped out a plan for viewers to follow and provided questions, with answers to some of them. Some setbacks he had were finding the right materials for his work, since most of his documents were personal, he couldn’t show them off in his presentation. He had to carefully pick out which documents he needed and make sure none of his personal information was in it. Though the meticulous scavenger hunt for the necessary material for his project was a challenge for him and he faced some moments of doubt he was able to work to the point he felt content in what the end of what his project would look like. When asked what his proudest moment during his project was, he said, ” The proudest I was with my work was when I was done with it. Seeing my completed project I worked on since the beginning of this semester put me at ease knowing that I completed my assignment.”

Again, we see another amazing project being completed. I can’t wait to see him present his experiences and findings to the class next week.

Updates from groups we have heard from…

The first group we have is Film Group

According to a member of the group they have finished filming, they just need to make a couple tweaks to the film itself. The film will consist of 10–12-minute interviews with students, a day in a life with John, Madona’s brother, and a personal interview with Madona, who is one of the members of this group as previously mentioned, about her older brother. When asked what made them happy about this project, he said, “Overall, we are happy of what we created. Everyone contributed to their part, and we all just had a blast doing this project. We can’t wait for y’all to see it.”

If I had to be honest, this group is definitely part of the top 3 groups I am the most excited to see the results of.

The next group is the Afghan American Alliance of Georgia Group

According to a member of the group, they worked on a resource outline that can be referred to by the AAAGA team (and other branches they work with) when working with clients or when they need to pull information. Although they all felt down about not having enough time because they started late, there wasn’t any communication between the group and the AAAGA team. Once things started moving, they had a few things planned, for example working on a case file that the AAAGA team offered to them and a website for a resource place. Because of the limited time they focused mainly on their outline. Unfortunately, most of what they had planned for the semester they decided to put as the next step plan for the group of next semesters. They felt like even though they may not have gotten to do much, they at least created an outline that can be continuously used in the future. They believe that because this is a new project if something has gotten started it will be enhanced in the future.

The third group we have is Neurological Disability Research Group

According to a member of the group, on March 3rd of 2024, the week before this date, they sent a survey to participants and received a few replies. When they sent me this update, they were expanding their scope for the survey and reaching out to members of the DREAM club and the class. Since it was a quick 5–6-minute survey, we hope to get more replies from expanding their scope. They were also starting to form their final presentation. Unfortunately, I didn’t get back to their email early enough to link it below, but I will still attach their flyer to this article.

The last group is my group, the Magazine Group

As of the last post I did about the groups about a month ago I believe I had posted 1 other post at the time. As of today, I believe this will be my 3rd post since I got back to my project. I had to take a little break because I had a lot going on in my life, but I am back now. I believe I have about two more posts to make and then I must finish up my presentation on the project. I wish I could have done more articles and stuck to my schedule, but it’s ok because at least I accomplished the most important goal to me, which was informing you all about the progress of each group in the current class.

With that being said this is the last update from all the groups for the semester I hope I did at least an okay job of giving some insight into almost all of the amazing groups for Dr.C’s Perspective on Disabilities Spring 2024 class and thank you for reading.
