Prompt 3

My grandfather died of emphysema as a result of a lifetime of chain smoking. Even knowing this, in his final days he continued to smoke.
Cigarettes damage every organ in your body but they’re best known for their effect on your lungs. Regular smokers are as much as 30 times more likely to develop lung cancer. Recently vaping has been marketed as a healthy alternative to smoking, but this claim is almost certainly false.

  1. I’m moved that you chose something so personal. I applaud your openness to being vulnerable. Also, I think your depiction of lungs is good. I instantly recognize what I’m looking at and the colors speak volumes. Great choices.

  2. This looks amazing ! I wonder what the print on the foam plate looks like !? The lines on the lungs look great. I like how you chose to color the background and print the organ in black. Great job !

  3. I felt like I responded to this before but either way, your backstory is so moving. I love how you’ve used your lived experience, facts, and art to speak out against smoking.

Your choice of a red background is so powerful. It really activates the work. The black lungs contrast perfectly, while speaking to what smoking does to your lungs. I love how they look realistic although they’re abstractly rendered. Good job!

  4. This is a very poignant piece Griffin. Great use of the material to give the ridged/ribbed texture of the lungs. Your shape is original–and makes me want to keep studying it. It abstractly feels like a bird whose wings wont allow it get off the ground–which I could imagine it being very much how breathing feels with emphysema. Your choice of black reminds me of ashes–and on the red becomes pretty intense. WOW!. I am sorry about your grandfather. Thank you for sharing with us.
