Gabriella Ferrans, “Self-Portrait”

19.5’’x25.5’’, Conte Crayon, Charcoal pencil, and various erasing tools on toned paper

I had the most fun with project four. During the project period, I experimented with India ink, whether it be a wash or cross hatching with a dip pen, as well as conte crayon, a soft pastel-like medium. I used a range of techniques to practice with a bell pepper, skulls, and my own face. The peppers used cross hatching, stippling, and wash techniques. The skulls used smudging, hatching, and cross hatching, and my portrait used same combination of techniques. I practiced my portrait using graphite pencil first on 9’’x12’’ sketch paper, then charcoal pencil on 18’’x24’’ paper. Drawing the same subjects multiple times honed my attention to detail and my use of value and color.
