Introductory Geosciences II Lab 3

The following list of topics is intended to guide the student during their studying of the topics introduced in the lab.  Not all topics in each chapter will be tested; however, any topics introduced in the laboratory by the instructor should be considered information that will be tested.  This list is meant only to guide the student as they study each chapter for the exams.  As you read through each chapter, pay particular attention to the words marked in bold and italics.

Lab 3 – Groundwater Processes

  • AGI Chapter 12
    • What is groundwater?
    • What is an aquifer?
    • Caves and Karst topography
      • What is Karst topography?
      • Be able to identify the various features of Karst topography on a topographic map.
    • Location and movement of groundwater
      • Be able to determine the general direction of groundwater flow based on water table elevations shown on a topographic map (you will not be required to contour the water-table surface – just be able to read water-table elevations and understand that groundwater will flow from higher to lower elevations).
    • Land subsidence
      • What is an artesian well?
      • Why does land subsidence relate to groundwater withdrawal occur?
    • Be able to identify any of the above on a topographic map such as those used as examples in the chapter.
